“Great family hotel in Barbados”

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Barbados. Recently renovated, the rooms are clean and elegantly furnished. Even when it's busy, the hotel and its 3 swimming pools do not feel overcrowded, and the guests -mostly British- are fairly mixed between couples and young families. Everyone gets along quite well. The hotel offers a wide range of services (generous breakfast, watersports, spa, restaurant, beach at a prime location...) but the strongest asset of the hotel (beside the very nice rooms) is the free kids club and its lovely staff members who keep the kids busy while the parents rest on the beach. My 5 year-old daughter loved it! They also offer babysitting services, which can be very convenient from time to time. Overall the hotel staff is very friendly and service-oriented. Even though the hotel is located on the busy west coast, beware that there's not much to see or visit at a walking distance outside of the hotel. Therefore cabs quickly become a necessity if you want to explore further.

“Would definitely go back when in Barbados”

The hotel itself is well maintained and located on a beautiful beach-providing excellent access to all activities. The service at this hotel was exceptional with ample staffing. In addition to the hotel restaurants - next door located on the beach is Daphne's which provides excellent dining overlooking the beach. If you have a car it's easy to see all of the many sights available in Barbados.

“October 2011 stay”

We just got back from a 7 night stay at Tamarind. The people are great and were always available for anything that we might need. Andy (hotel manager) is always walking around and interacting with guests. Everyone we interacted with were very friendly and open. By end of stay we felt more like a guest of someone's home rather than staying at a hotel. If looking for a place to stay on the island, I would highly recommend staying here.

“Extremely friendly staff”

The hotel staff was outstanding. They were friendly and very helpful, even if they were on "Island time". Even the people getting the hotel ready for the "busy season" (painters, gardners and similar) were friendly and courteous. One of the best Mojito's I have ever had, ask for Chris, Mark or Alecia. as an example, we had a minor glitch with our hotel room and someone was there to fix it within an hour. As minor as it was, they could have waited until we left and I still would recommend the hotel.

Area recommendations
We were part of a small group so each night was a little different in the negotiating process. In general we visited Holetown 3 nights while there and enjoyed it each time. There does not seem to be a lot of night life (late night life that is), but still s great place for eating local foods at a reasonable price. Felt very small town, which was nice also.
When to go
We were there in October because of work schedules. A little rainy, but that varied from day to day. The nice thing about it was that, the crowds were smaller so you got a lot of attention. There are probably better times than when we were there for the weather, but as far as relaxing and not fighting vacation crowds it was great.
Getting around
We found Taxis were the best way to get around , espcially for a small group (4-6 people). When we were in groups of 2-3, then the bus service was okay, but you have to be ready for some exciting rides.
Outdoors or beach
The beach at our hotel was fairly good. The hotel is a little close to the water so there is not much beach. Water is typical for the Caribbean... warm and clear. As far as the carribean goes, about average. Did not enjoy all the peddlers that roamed the beach, but since they are working and trying to make a dollar, it was acceptable TO A Point.

“Tamarind is a 3!”

The Tamarind is def a 3 star hotel. We had a deluxe oceanfront rm which was less than deluxe but the view was a 5! Rooms need updating, esp bathrooms. The pools needed to be cleaned more often. Service and friendliness of staff was excellent. We've visited many islands in the caribbean and this hotel was not impressive compared to others.

Holetown, Bridgetown
Getting around
local bus takes you everywhere for $2
What to pack
The island has a strong British influence, therefore, dressing up for dinner is a must. We went casual and got some looks.
Dining
See the concierge. She will make necessary reservations for you and is excellent help! 246 Restaurant in the hotel serves decent lunch and dinner is ok. Do NOT get an all inclusive, plenty of great restaurants in surrounding area. Daphne's (next door) has great food: Italian, steak & seafood. Scarlet (across the street from Daphne's) has great burgers, seafood, fried chickenm mashed pot & excellent drinks! The Beach House is VERY romantic and has great food as well. There are also some local eateries & bars on the sides of the road around these places.
Family-friendly activities
Someone else wrote a review about this not being a good hotel for kids. During our visit we encountered children of all ages.
Outdoors or beach
Hotel offers free watersport activities which are fun for everyone.

“A great improvement”

We had been to this hotel for several years before the recent refurbishment and after a break of a couple of years decided to return to see the changes. We were very pleasantly surprised and found the hotel atmosphere totally changed and more professionally run. The bar area and decking has transformed the whole dining experience and the food and service has improved beyond recognition. Our room was excellent with more storage space than we have experienced in other hotels. The bathroom, although spacious, is a little outdated but perfectly functional and there were plenty of clean towels. A great deal of thought has gone into the refurbishment of this hotel and the previous bad points have been tackled with great effect. We will definitely return.

“Will definitely go back”

I took a chance because there were some not so nice reviews, but I read the hotel had been redone. The location is excellent on a long stretch of beautiful beach. The food at the hotel is excellent with more fabulous restaurants all around it. The 246 restaurant serves different foods each night, such as an outside fish grill, pasta night and they are all very good. The staff was extremely friendly. You can relax or walk a long stretch of beaches or do all kinds of water sports activities. They have a water taxi to take you to a couple other hotels connected with their group, The breakfast which was included in our package was great! Loved our vacation there!

Area recommendations
I like the Carribean side of the island, Paynes Bay has the beautiful beach and lots of great restaurants
When to go
We were there in May and it is the slow time, so easy to get reservations , etc Not crowded .
Getting around
We rented a car but I would not do that again. Roads are very narrow and if you are not used to left side driving be prepared to struggle on the secondary roads . Most of the locals are actually extremely courteous to rental cars as they are marked with H plates, but driving on the left is not the problem, it is the roads lacking signs to direct you. Even with a map you will get lost . I suggest just hiring cabs or taking the bus or hotel transportation.
What to pack
Everything is elegant casual- which is pretty loose- you don't need any sweaters! It is warm!

Dining

“I would definitely go back”

My family and I had a wonderful time at the Tamarind Cove. Even though the facilities were a little shopworn in places, the staff more than compensated by being gracious and helpful. Everyone we encountered always had smiles for us and asked how we were doing. We took advantage of the free water sports on the beach, the gym, and the computer room. We never had a problem getting comfortable lounge chairs at the beach, and the staff was happy to move the chairs to locations that were out of direct sun. We found plenty of places to hangout and relax at the hotel. When we wanted to explore, we were able to get into Holetown within minutes and try restaurants and shops.
