Cotton Jazz Bar the hippest and jazziest venue in Bangkok’s China Town. From the incredible design that harkens back to the romance of 1930’s Shanghai, a time when great jazz artists were featured in the best clubs in the city to the elegance and intimacy of 1950’s underground nightclubs in New York, Chicago and Paris.
Cotton has found the best Thai jazz artists to do their thing, including Siam Band, Harmony and our new favorite, Marshmallow; each playing all types of jazz, from avante-garde to bebop to jazzy interpretations of classic pop songs (think about Coltrane’s “My favorite Things!).

“Beautiful, quirky hotel in a fascinating location”
We spent one night at Shanghai Mansion in late October on our last night in Bangkok. Despite what must have been a stressful time for staff during the floods (there were sandbags to climb over to get inside), the service was excellent with lovely staff who spoke great English. We were blown away by the beautiful, quirky interior of the hotel (every bit as good as it looks in the promotional photos) and of our (Mei Hua/superior) room and the the breakfast included with our room was good. The surrounding area of Chinatown was interesting to explore, I only wish we'd had more than a couple of hours to spare. Only two (minor) things to note - the pillows were extremely high so not terribly comfortable, and our room had no natural lighting (but a large coloured glass "window" with backlighting helped a lot). It may be possible (?) to request a naturally-lit room if this bothers you, but I wouldn't let it put you off staying here!
“Quaint Hotel”
This hotel is conveniently located in China Town........less so for some other attractions. It is in the old Chinese Opera House and decorated in the period of Shang Hai around the 1940's.......it is extremely quaint......... Jazz band at night,,,,,,, food is great and surrounded by foodstalls at night............Has won Boutique Hotel Awards.........Close to HuaLampong Railway station which is why we chose it several months ago. Enjoyed it so went back on this visit 4 months later.
“Great value hotel, location not great.”
I enjoyed 3 days at the Shanghai Mansion in Oct. 2011. During these 3 days I explored Bangkok as much as I could. This hotel gave me everything I needed for a good price. The decor is very nice and the rooms also have very interesting and unique furniture. The cement floor throughout was not ideal, but worked. The rooms and shower are comfortable and efficient and the WiFi worked well. Breakfast was adequate and the staff were quite friendly. The location of the hotel is great to experience the hustle and bustle of chinatown. There are lots of market stalls and food options nearby, but the fact that this area is so busy works against it in terms of mobility. There is an underground station 10/15m walk from the hotel and some bus and river boat services nearby too. The most annoying thing is that tuk-tuk and taxi drivers don't seem keen to come to this area, especially at night or in rainy conditions, which is not ideal when trying to get back to the hotel. My room was very quiet so no noise issues regarding the the traffic. All in all an excellent option if you would like to stay in this are of town.
“Might not look much from the outside, but just wait to you go inside...IT'S AMAZING”
We booked online through Expedia, and didn't expect what we got.... We got great service from the moment we stepped out of the Taxi. We got faultless book in attention. We got an amazing room with a huge comfortable bed, although the room should have at least 1 power point to charge camera batteries and phones without the need to have your room card key inserted. We got the best breakfast you could wish for, with a huge range to choose from...their French Toast is to die for. We got amazing evening meals (just try the Soft Shell Crab) with quality live band. We got very personal service from visiting management through to staff at all levels. We got so much more than just great value...Can't wait to go back .
“Best hotel experience in the last 5 years”
We've stayed at numerous hotels around Southeast Asia and this hotel blew me away. Everything - from little details around the room to polite and courteous stuff was absolutely amazing.
“a beautiful place”
fantastic location, original design, colours are used with gusto, very tastefully and with courage and confidence. on the minus side, I was bitten by bed bugs, which wa no fun, but then again it is no indication of poor hygene or anything- bed bugs is something that can happen anywhere to anyone. One of the receptionists seemed very timid and would ask her what appeared to be senior colleague for advise in dealing with our queries. That lady was excellent. Her knowledge was broad and she was able to give us some tips and advice on our choice of entertainment.
“Nice boutique hotel”
The Shanghai Mansion has all of the benefits and disadvantages of a boutique hotel. The decor was gorgeous and you truly felt like you were going back in time to a merchant house. The rooms were smaller than I probably would have gotten at another luxury hotel. The staff did struggle with English but I was able to get by. The Chinatown location was nice but it was definitely an urban location in the thick of things. You walk out the door and you are immediately in the midst of street vendors and tuk-tuk drivers. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would not hesitate to recommend it. However, I'm not sure it would fit everyone's taste.
“Very nice”
Beautiful hotel and room. An oasis in busy Chinatown section of Bangkok. Convenient location to Grand Palace and other sites. Would definitely return.
“Great stay”
The servers are polite and hornets. They are always willing to help.
“Fantastic!!”
We stayed June 2011 and loved the hotel, great location, very quiet in room and clean. Hotel staff all very friendly, breakfast great and loved the live music in Cotton Club and the soft shell crab was the best ever
