“My usual address in Bangkok”

I have been to Bangkok many times and stayed and many different hotel. I have found Rembrandt to be a perfect package of standard, price and location.

“Great stay and very convenient.”

The hotel and staff are excellent. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. Some of the furniture is a little beat up, but still very clean and nice looking. The hotel is about a 4 minute walk from Asok station on the BTS or from Sukhumvit on the MRT. The hotel is off the main road, so it's relatively quiet, yet there are still lots of restaurants, and cafes very close. The restaurants in the hotel are excellent and both the food and service were great!. A great place to stay for some 5-star treatment at a 3-star price. I'd recommend it for single travellers, couples, and families.

Area recommendations

I'd recommend Siam Square if you're looking to do some shopping or craving a bit of the big city. There is also a great aquarium which is worth checking out and fun for everyone. However the area to see for temples, palaces and museums is Phranakorn. There are lots of Tuk Tuk drivers willing to take you to 4 main locations in an hour for about 40 baht, but you can negotiation down to about 20 baht. If you're relatively fit, I recommend walking too. You'll see lots of interesting sights and in my opinion walking is always a better way to see a new city. As well, be sure to wear sandals or easy to remove shoes, as many of the temples require you to remove your shoes before going inside. The main roads are generally straight, but if you venture to the side roads, be sure to keep a good sense of direction as you could find yourself lost quickly. The weekend markets are great and plentiful around the city, so I recommend that you check any of them out. Just be sure to keep all your valuables in front of you, and if possible, under your clothes. They are very crowded and a trolling ground for pick pockets. Enjoy!

Getting around

Tuk Tuks are great, but be sure to negotiate the price. If you take a taxi, make sure the meter is on before he starts driving. Never accept a flat rate from the taxi drivers. Walking is easy in most areas, but be sure to wear good shoes...

What to pack

Be sure to take some sandals or easy to remove shoes. Most of all, don't forget a sweat towel and some good sunscreen...

Family-friendly activities

Siam Aquarium is a nice place to visit. The ticket price includes a 4-D movie, and lots of extras. A nice way to escape the hot afternoon sun...

“Excellent Standard”

Our second stay at Rembrandt Hotel did not disappoint. All staff very professional and those on the tour desk keen to help out with information on interesting places to visit, not just to sell tours. The breakfast was outstanding, with every taste catered for. The food was fresh and appetising. The ironing board was delivered within 5 minutes of it being requested. Good value for the money.

“Just as good 2nd time back”

This was our second stay at the Rembrandt, we were there in December 2009, and chose to return due to the great experience we had the first time and the location - 10 minute easy walk to sky train, and only 4 or 5 stops from the major shopping and hub. Staff very professional and efficient, executive rooms are spacious, clean and well appointed. Paying a little extra to have breakfast included is well worth it. Their limousine service (cars or vans) is well worth paying for (approx NZ$60 one way), takes all the hassle out of finding your way into the city from the airport - you literally walk straight out of customs and someone is waiting with a vehicle very close by. We took friends this time and they were equally impressed. Rugby world cup games available in your room or down at the lobby bar, kept the men very happy! We would chose to stay here again.

Getting around

Sky train is still the quickest and cheapest way to get around Bangkok, running every couple of minutes and without the hassle of bartering etc. Be careful with Tuktuks - the ride is fun, but they always want to take you somewhere else, like a souvenir or gem shop. This is because they get a "kick" back - usually petrol. Where they take you tends to be off the beaten track and very hard sell, so if you don't want the hassle make sure you are firm and clear about where they take and drop you off at, they can be very sly. Some of the taxi's are the same, so be wary.

Shopping

The night markets in the Sala Daeng area are very good particularly for wide variety of handbags. Although an "adults" area of town, many families still shop here, go early before the action heats up if you have children! Can't beat MBK for shopping, has everything and can still barter to a certain degree.

Dining

Our favourite - Sunday Brunch at Trader Vics at the Marriott Resort & Spa on the river. A complimentary boat from the hotel will take you across from central pier, and then you have 3 half hours of food heaven - worth absolutely every penny, you won't have had food variety or a buffet like this before with chefs on every station cooking it fresh. Two set prices includes all you can eat and drink (one more expensive if you want wine included). A fabulous dining experience, right on the river, great facilities and attentive staff.

“Pretty decent hotel, though not the best I've been to.”

Hotel was nice and clean and fairly modern, though maybe a bit on the expensive side for what you get. Service not bad but not great, took about 30 mins just to check in but they were all very friendly and eager to help with any queries. The rooms themselves were nice and comfortable, free wifi is also a nice touch but the air con in our room was not great, it still felt really hot even when it was on the High setting. Breakfast buffet was lovely, with a large selection, changed daily and a few dishes cooked to order. Overall, our impression was a positive one and we would stay there again.

“Great stay”

I managed to get a good rate through Expedia and spent a few very pleasant days at the Rembrandt simply unwinding. The pool area is great and the service was very good. Plenty of nightlife in close vicinity. Will definitely recommend and will return.

“Not the best location”
