“Comfort among the ruins in historic Merida, Spain”

We walked into Spanish history when we checked into the Hotel Parador in Merida, Spain - a small city boasting the most Roman ruins outside of Rome! It's centrally located in this pleasant little city in rural Spain on the site of former Roman buildings that were more recently a hospital and convent. Frankly, I was charmed and impressed with the very historic, clean and friendly feel to the hotel. I felt like Cathryn Zeta Jones checking into Zorro's place! Bathrooms were large and very well done. All floors tile and a cozy bar area, upscale restaurant and meeting rooms were on the first level. Staff worked well with our limited Spanish and were very friendly. I recommend it to all visitors to this must see town in the fascinating Extremadura region. Price is a bargain for what you get!!

Area recommendations
You will get a more intimate and relaxed look at amazingly preserved Roman ruins in Merida. If you are into "off the beaten path" amazing towns and Spanish history/culture, rent a car and drive the 3 hours from Madrid west to Merida. Easy drive on a major highway. Buy the pass to visit all the historic sites in Merida for 15 euros and take time to enjoy the amazing sites around this city where walking to all is easily done.
