“Great location, soft bed, pack your own hairdryer”

As far as location goes this place really was great. Approx 20 minute walk to the city centre and a 10 minute walk to bus stop for internal link bus to city / Newmarket/ Britomart. The bed was very soft but the room was clean. The place needs a bit of updating - - I recommend packing your own hairdryer as the one fixed to the bathroom wall is ancient! - - but it was clean and serviced daily. The reception staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. We didn't eat at the hotel but breakfasts are available and there is an on-site restaurant. Overall we found it met our needs and would stay again - - if only for its location!

Getting there

Easy to get to Parnell from the main motorway (state highway). Roads are well signposted.

Dining

Parnell has some really lovely restaurants (Thai, Indian, French) and many are BYO - there is also a wine shop on the main street so you can take your own with you. There are also some great little cafe's and a chocolate shop worth visiting (put your diet on hold that day!)

“Parnell by the rose garden”

The hotel is a 3.5 star, and for that is ok. Bed was a bit soft, bathroom older, water damaged and looked its age, but everything clean and tidy, certainly value at the price. The location by the Parnell Rose Garden was very pretty - arrived just past the best of the bloom in April, but still worth the time for a stroll. Just up the road is the Rosehip Cafe - excellent breakfast and lunch, easily best in Parnell and the closest. Parnell centre is a good walk either back up the hill or across the gully - either way you will be feeling you have walked the distance after a weekend there without a car. The bus service from Parnell Rd at the end of this walk - the Link service, is excellent - between 10 and 15minutes wait at worst, and accesses all the good bits of Auckland for the short stay. We enjoyed our stay but might get a car next time or go closer to transport as many times up the hill on foot took its toll on cityfolk who obviously don't walk enough at home...

Area recommendations

Parnell - very pretty and good window shopping. Newmarket - good shopping (my wife enjoyed the shoe shopping) The Viaduct - good bars, tourist info Ponsonby - good for a walk down the street Auckland CBD - dont bother K Road - dont bother unless looking for a kebab at 2am (I wasn't) Okahu Bay - spent some time at the sailing club and out on the harbour - the Harbour is one of the best I've seen, very different from Sydney and great for a day on the water.

Getting around

Highly recommend the Link bus service - gets you quickly to all the good places.

Shopping

Newmarket for value Parnell for top end window shopping or maxing out the card Ponsonby for something different
