“Extremely pricey and out of the way but luxurious.”

The Margi is a very beautiful hotel. The service is fantastic. You will go down to the pool area and be ready to relax and be greeted by someone ready to take your drink order. At some moment you will decide to look at the drink menu and realize that a typical alcoholic drink costs about as much as a lunch in a local bistro. The cool music you hear playing? I hope you like it at 12:30 in the morning. Because the music and people in the pool area keep the party going all night long. I also hope you have a car or don't mind paying for a cab or don't need to actually go into Athens because it's pretty far away from the hub. Mind you, there are public and private beaches within walking distance and a few restaurants. If money is no object and you like to party in a chic kind of way this is the hotel for you. I also got the impression from the website pics that the hotel was fairly isolated. That is not the case. It is in the middle of a residential area. I think that is why they started with the chic music - to drown out the traffic noise. It would have been a lot nicer if drinks were half the price and they toned down the music at say... midnight. But the service is first class all the way. So if money is no object and you want to be up late enjoying some chic nightlife this is a great hotel to stay at.

Area recommendations
When visiting Athens as a foreigner you really need to start in the Plaka or somewhere near the Acropolis. If you want to see something a little more authentic and where Athenians actually go check out the Pisiri district (looks scary at first, but overcome your fear and go in a block or two and you will not be disappointed).
When to go
June was great - the temp was not too hot (25-27C each day) and the rainy season is all done.
Getting there
I wouldn't recommend Alitalia airlines. The planes are old and the service is noticeably rude. A cab from the airport is probably the best way for the first time visitor.
Getting around
If in the Plaka you can walk most places. But to go to different parts of the city my wife and I found the subway to be very user friendly to foreigners. Next time I'll take the subway everywhere now that I'm familiar with it. It's so easy and cheap and every sign in the subway is in english. So if you already know the stop closest to your hotel and don't have much luggage - go for an adventure! Just like every subway in every large metro area keep your handbag in front of you, but I wouldn't worry about anything more than petty theft as there is a large security presence. I felt way more safe at the subway here than in New York. Once when my wife and I were figuring out on the map where to go a friendly local came up and in broken english asked where we wanted to go and she led us to the right platform and even got on the subway with us for one stop to make sure we got on the right one!
What to pack
Don't forget to buy a converter thingy for your electronic devices! If you are a woman looking to buy shoes you don't need to pack many because Athens must be the shoe capital of Europe. In fact my wife and I deliberately packed very light so we could breeze through customs on our way there with the mindset that we would buy a lot of clothes once we got there. The plan worked out great. There are so many stores selling all types of regular and touristy type clothes (you know, the kind of clothes that you generally only wear on vacation like that hawian shirt in your back closet).
Must see
Acropolis, Flea Market near the Plaka/Pisiri district, The Archaeological Museum. If you have some extra time take a trip over to "Lake" Vouliagmeni. It's more of a pond where hot springs keep the water temp at 25C and little fish come up and nibble at your toes (who needs a spa after that?)
Shopping
Be wary of merchants in the Plaka. They are acutely aware that 99% of their business comes from foreigners. There are no prices on anything and they make up the price based on how much they think they can get out of you. The jewelery stores are ridiculously over-priced compared to North America. Though we did find a place near Monstragi Square or something like that (Takis Jeweler I believe) where the guy's prices were comparable to a generic jeweler in Canada. We also took the subway up to the mall and found prices reasonable and in some cases below that of Canada. The Lacoste store in particular was definitely a little lower in price.
Dining
Most places in the Plaka are at least decent. A few are exceptional. Tipping is optional in Europe so if you didn't receive exceptional service do not tip. I know it feels weird but "tips" are usually billed into the price of the food in the first place.
Nightlife
Check out the Pisiri district for lively nightlife. The Plaka district is quite tame for nightlife but if outdoor cafes and bistros are your thing they stay open quite late.
Outdoors or beach
In Athens you should check out Lake Vouliagmeni. The hot springs keep the temp at 25C and there are neat little fish that come up and nibble at your feet. I had about a dozen on my feet and it tickled like crazy. Across the street from that are public and private beaches on the Agean.

“Really Cool”

its a great hotel with nice pool. 5 mins walking to Astir Beach. Great restaurants in the area. The only negtive thing was i could not sleep well because the blackout they are useing in the rooms is not strong enough.

Yous have to go the ISLAND its a nice open air restaurant & Bar with a great sea view , food & music
