“Beautiful garden”

The hotel is a big beautiful garden. I spent all my time there to photograph birds inside the hotel garden. I can easily spend my entire vacation without leaving the hotel.

“Very nice place!”

We came to Fortuna to visit the hot springs and see the volcano and selected this hotel looking for just a place to sleep. The hotel exceeded all our expectations in service, features and price. Usually breakfast included can mean something small, in this case it was a full buffet plus an omelet bar etc all included in price. Grounds are fantastic as are the pool and hot tub areas and children's play areas. We would have gladly stayed several more days if we could have. Rooms are spotless and have everything you need plus a view of the volcano from each room. Security is excellent. I would highly reccomended this hotel.

Area recommendations
This hotel is not walking distance to town so if you do not have a car you can catch a cab. Close to all attractions and quiet.
When to go
Costa Rica has a rainy season in the fall so the best months for travel are Dec to Mar. We came in October for family reasons and had a lot of rain but all attractions were not busy and prices were very reasonable.

“Great location”

If you have a car, it's only about a 5 minute drive into town. The view from your back balcony is gorgeous!! The pools are very nice. Front desk staff very nice to deal with, and the free breakfast was pretty good....... The downsides: Lots of ants in our room and the restaurant service was horrible!!! Most places in Costa Rica do add 10% charge for tip so caution to that.

“Great hotel for friendly service, location and price.”

We loved Volcano Lodge and Gardens. The rooms were very comfortable, nice layout. Great view of the volcano. Saw lots of beauitful gardens and toucans on the property. Close to everything that needs to be seen in the area. The service was fantastic. The Wi-Fi can really only be accessed by the restaurant or in the hotel lobby. Friendly helpful service for all our needs. The breakfast buffet was great. The Sura restaurant was the best deal in town with tasty great choices on the menu. Happy hour, pools and hot tubs....for the price it's the only place I would stay in the area.

Area recommendations
La Fortuna is very close by. For hot springs avoid paying at other hotels and just go where the locals go for free. The Cerro Chato hike is tough but worth it. Be prepared for a tough go. At the Arenal Observation area ask for a tour guide named Lion...everyone knows him great tour guide.
When to go
We went during the off season. It rained in the late afternoon but we were mostly done with our activities for the day. Much less crowded, less expensive and the hotels and restaurants bend over backwards to please you. Much more personalized service.
Getting there
Rent a car and take the drive from San Jose to La Fortuna. The roads are not as bad as other websites say and a great way to see the country. eople are very friendly and will get you going the right way if you get side tracked You'll need the car to get around the area anyway.
Getting around
Rent a small SUV. You'll be glad you did.
What to pack
Your going to need quick drying outdoor hiking clothes and shoes. Really don't need dressy clothes.
Must see
Do your homework and check out everything. 3-5 days you can do many activities
Shopping
La Fortuna is really the only place. We drove for over an hour to Quesasda but didn't really find any thing that we were looking for. Nice city, restaurants but long way to go for not much to shop for.
Dining
Lots of choices on the main roads. Don't be afraid to try the rustic small mom and pop places.
Family-friendly activities
Unless your kids are older and thrill seekers/adventure types I would say leave them home.
Nightlife
We were too tired from hiking, canoe trips, zip lining for any any nightlife. I really didn't see much anyway. Some in La Fortuna.
Outdoors or beach
There was no beach in the area of course but can do plenty of swimming at the La Fortuna Falls and the Cerro Chato crater lake. Otherwise everything is outside.

“"AMAZING DEAL, should be rated FOUR stars!"”

Expedia gave this hotel three stars and I do not know why (it should be four stars). At first I had my doubt, but once I read the reviews I decided to give it a chance and booked it for one night. Place was AMAZING, CLEAN & staff were very friendly and the free breakfast had a big selections, delicious!! I ended up booking my room for two additional nights......Save your money, I totally recomend this hotel and will be returning. PS I loved the spacious bathroom and the patio!!

Area recommendations
Must visit to Rio Celeste. AMAZING water color (aqua). Loved the waterfalls and hot springs!! For two weeks, I traveled all over Costa Rica and Rio Celeste was my best trip.........I also, I recommend Baldi Hot Springs (with meal). They have 25 hot springs and water slides.

“Full service resort in Arenal”

We had a great 2-night stay at Volcano Lodge & Gardens during the green (rainy) season. Everything was great, starting from the very welcoming hotel staff at check-in. They provided very detailed information regarding our room and tour options available, as well as gave us cold welcome drinks, which were much appreciated. Following check-in, we were escorted to our room via golf cart. The rooms are quite large and very clean. There was an air conditioner and coffee maker, but no refrigerator or microwave. The back door opened out onto a patio with a gorgeous view of Arenal Volcano. The resort premises are beautifully manicured, with a short nature trail that leads through the many lovely plants and trees on the property. There are two pool areas; they are not large, but very clean and pleasant for lounging--we enjoyed 2-for-1 drinks poolside during their daily happy hour. Finally, the on-site Sura Restaurant is a real gem; we particularly enjoyed the coconut milk and scallion ceviche and smoked trout pasta, and the service was friendly and accommodating. The hotel does offer spa facilities (which we did not try), but note that there are no hot springs at the hotel itself, unlike some other nearby properties. If you are looking for a comfortable resort with a great view and good service, we would certainly recommend Volcano Lodge & Gardens.

“Relaxing & luxurious but out of town”

Thoroughly enjoyed the Volcano Lodge & Gardens. The grounds are lush and lovely, and some of the fruit and vegetables served come from the hotel's own trees and gardens. The staff all speak English and are very helpful, the pool and restaurant area are extremely nice, and the rooms are very comfortable. It seems that every room has a view of the volcano, although it was not active during our stay. However, the hotel is 7 km out of the town of La Fortuna, so if you don't have a rental car, you will need to either take a taxi or an organized tour to the local attractions. If you just want to stay put and relax, you will find this to be a great location!

“beautiful grounds and great views”

staff were friendly. room was spacious and clean. grounds were very well maintained. pools were nice. great views of the volcano. breakfast was very good. other meals and drinks were a bit expensive. tours are cheaper if booked in La Fortuna.

Area recommendations
hotel is well located between lake and town of La Fortuna. Lots of choices for dining in La Fortuna. Tours should be booked in town. Costa Rica Descents (whitewater rafting) were excellent! The swimming hole at the bridge just past the Fortuna waterfall road should not be missed.
