“truly a mountain paradise!- great value”

stayed here for only one night with our family of 5( 3 teenage boys.) Located just a few minutes drive outside La Fortuna, very convenient to town and activities. Staff very friendly and helpful. Pool area was a plus- sitting on a hill and overlooking the volcano with beautifully landscaped grounds was just amazing. The pool,(actually multiple pools) while not an official "hotspring" was very warm and inviting with a swim up bar and waterfall, as well as a "cool" pool for dipping. The rooms were extremely large with a king and queen bed- we booked 2 premium suites which connected (it was actually like our own casita, although the hotel considers it a "room") and made it vwery convenient for our family. The bathroom had both a regular shower and a waterfall shower and gave the feeling of showering in a rainforest- nice! There was also a jacuzzi on our patio which we never had time to use because the pool was so nice. Our only negative was that the WiFi, which was free, often didnt work so well- they do have a computer in the lobby for guests to use however. The rate we got booking through Expedia was great and about 1/4 of what I would have expected to pay in the US for a hotel with similar amenities- would go back in a minute and would want to stay longer- we were driving around CR for a week and staying in various places....

Area recommendations
La Fortuna is a typical Costa Rican town- people are friendly and we ate at several very "local" places which were very good.Try the canopy tours- there are several very close by- we did one called Ecoglide which was awesome and i would recommend trying this while you are here- they were very safety conscious and gave much instruction before starting. There is also horseback riding, volcano hikes (if you are driving you can drive up towards Arenal Observatory lodge and get a nice view of the back of Arenal Volcano without gong into the park- drive until you get to the river and park just over it.)- there are souvenir shops in town and also on the road from towm up to the hotel where i found better prices than anywhere else in CR for wood products and various souvenirs.- Enjoy!

“Good value, Gorgeous View of the Arenal Volcano!”

The staff were courteous and spoke english (mostly young, surprisingly). The room had a semi-private patio and jacuzzi with a gorgeous view of the Arenal Volcano. The natural waterfall-like shower looked pretty cool. However, the front door & double glass doors didn't seal completely allowing in quite a few small insects. We didn't have any problems with mosquitos, though. The room is spacious--half of a hut/cabin--we had both king and queen size beds. We had what felt like was almost a hike to our room, since we were a little higher up the mountain. And unfortunately, at the time we visited in Oct 2011, there was construction on more cabins right next to us. In general, the hotel was pretty nice and an excellent value. It seemed appropriate for a romantic get-away as well as family-friendly.

Area recommendations
This hotel is ~5min drive outside of the town of La Fortuna, and pretty quiet. It had great views of the Arenal Volcano. It is a good idea to have a car rental if you want to explore La Fortuna area--like going on hikes, visiting the La Fortuna waterfalls, etc. Note, that the drive from San Jose airport is not well-marked, but not too difficult. But the adventure tour outfitters offer free transportation to and from the hotels. Of which, I must recommend Pure Trek for rapelling/canyoning and Sky Trek for ziplining/canopy tours in the La Fortuna / Arenal Volcano area.
When to go
October-November is the height of the rainy season! Fewer travelers- better deals. But it's still a tropical area, warm and nice, even in October. Just make sure you get your outdoor activities done in the morning, because it typically started raining sometime in the afternoon and into the evening.

“I loved the Mountain Paradise Hotel -- LOVED IT!”

I surprised my husband with a trip to Costa Rica for his 40th birthday, and our seven-night stay in the country started with three nights at the Mountain Paradise Hotel. As it was the least expensive hotel of the three we'd be staying with, I assumed it would be the least satisfying, and that was actually not the case at all. It turned out to be our favorite hotel of the three. The room was gorgeous, the bathroom included, the place felt very OF Costa Rica, the service was great, the food was great, the location was gorgeous, our view was amazing, we adored the swim-up pool and hammocks and landscaping -- I just can't say enough about the hotel. We will recommend it to everyone, and that's much more than we can say for our two other hotels. My only complaint is that I had asked that they have chocolate-covered strawberries and red wine waiting in the room when we arrived, and only the chocolate-covered strawberries were there. When I asked why the wine was missing, I was told they didn't know when I'd be getting in, and that seemed lame to me. Why couldn't a bottle of red wine with an opener just be left there? But really, that was minor. We loved this place and would go back in a heart beat. Long live the Mountain Paradise Hotel.

“One Word - OUTSTANDING”

Honestly I have only amazing things to say about this hotel. My boyfriend and I drove from San Jose to Mountain Paradise and upon arrival we were greeted with cold towels and some of the best fresh juice I've ever drank. We were then driven up on a golf cart to the "bungalow" where our Premium room was by Kaylor (who provided us with TONS of help the rest of our trip - a new level of hospitality!). The room itself was perfect - beautiful bathroom with two showers (one of them a waterfall), a soaking tub outside on our private deck, huge bed with mosquito net - just stunning. The grounds are BEAUTIFUL, and the pool is sooo warm but refresing (and also open 24 hours!!). The swim up bar was a huge hit for us (Andres is THE BEST bartender - makes drinks the old fashioned way!). And you can see the volcano from every point of the hotel grounds. I wouldn't tell my friends and family to stay anywhere else in Arenal, because the experience I had at Mountain Paradise was simply outstanding.

“Secluded, Romantic, Affordable Hotel. Ideal to RELAX”

Had a wonderful time at Mountain Paradise Hotel. I believe it is ideal for couples or individuals looking to relax. Rooms are spacious, clean, have a great bathroom and jacuzzi, and are secluded from other rooms (sort of individual cottages). The included breakfast was fantastic - both traditional breakfast menu plus local meals every morning. The pool area is not exciting, but there is a small pool bar open until late. The hotel grounds are very nice. I also recommend the SPA which is small but beautiful, and extremely eco-friendly! It is also way more affordable that other SPAs in the area. Tours will pick you up from the hotel lobby. Had a great time and would definitively recommend for the value!

Getting around
I recommend renting a car.
Dining
Don't fall into tourist traps. SODA is the local name for typical food restaurants. Try the house pizza ("pizza de la casa") at Soda La Parada right at the center of La Fortuna.
Outdoors or beach
If you are into sporty activities, DO go WATER RAFTING!!!

“Gorgeous hotel, perfect stay”

When we arrived at Mountain Paradise Hotel, we were immediately greeted by warm, friendly staff, given moist towel to freshen up, and served some tropical juice. They let us do the check-in while sitting on the couch, which was a nice touch. The property is absolutely stunning. Most beautiful hotel I've ever stayed at. We were initially taken to our room in a golf cart, which was nice. It was a little tough to find our room again the second time, but once we figured it out, it was fine. Perhaps clearer signs would help. The breakfast was quite good (not the best ever, but still good), but the views were the best part. You have a perfect view of the volcano at breakfast, and at the pool. Our room also had its own jacuzzi, which I was not even expecting. However, we enjoyed the hotel pool so much (it's heated), that we didn't even need to use the private jacuzzi. Loved the swim-up bar at the hotel pool. It was an amazing experience overall. The hotel also helped us by booking a wonderful canopy tour with Arenal Mundo Aventura, and they booked our dinner at the Tabacon hot springs. It was all made very easy; we hadn't booked any of our excursions prior to arrival and it was no problem at all b/c the hotel took care of it for us. I highly recommend this hotel. The bathroom in our room was the most amazing bathroom-- it's HUGE, and you have two different showers, but we only used one of them b/c it is a waterfall! Lovely. Thank you!

Area recommendations
IIf you want to enjoy the town of La Fortuna, you may want to consider staying closer to La Fortuna. If you are going mostly for the volcano, hot springs, and canopy tours, like we were, the Mountain Paradise Hotel is in a great location. If you want to enjoy the nightlife/restaurants in La Fortuna in the evening, and do not care as much about the volcano views, you may want to consider staying in a place closer to the town, esp since I think those places are cheaper than the ones closer to the volcano.
Getting around
I thought driving in Costa Rica was going to be easier. The toughest part is the mountain roads. The roads we drove on were paved (b/t San Jose, La Fortuna, and Manuel Antonio), so that was not the issue-- the problem was the fact that you had to drive slowly and it was not a relaxing drive b/c you have to concentrate hard on the sharp curves and steep inclines. If you are afraid of heights and do not like driving on the edge of a mountain with no guard rail, then do yourself a favor and do not drive in Costa Rica. If you don't mind driving on mountain roads with steep inclines, lots of sharp curves, and a risk of fog rolling in to make things even more exciting, then go ahead and do the drive. Avoid driving at night b/c visibility is worse and it makes the drive scarier! I did not feel scared about the neighborhoods we drove through at any point-- I felt safe. The only thing that scared me was the fear of one of the huge trucks pushing us off the road and us falling off a cliff! I'm sure that rarely happens, but I would have preferred a more relaxing drive, and so would my boyfriend, who happens to be very good at driving a manual. Please do not drive in Costa Rica if you are not a VERY EXPERIENCED driver with a manual transmission vehicle. This is not the place to practice driving stick. Also watch out for the irrigation ditches on the side of the roads- most roads do not have a shoulder and instead have irrigation ditches that you can fall into- stay on the road.

“Mountain Paradise Review”

Great hotel. Staff were very helpful and friendly, included breakfast was good, nice pool area and pool bar. Great view of the volcano. Romantic. Only problem we ran into was the thin walls at the hotel. We were kept up both nights by our neighbors loud conversations or televisions. Otherwise a good experience though, and would go back.
