The hotel provided a friendly greeting. The room was clean and spacious with double doors to rear of the hotel with stunning views.
The evening we spent dining. The food was to a high standard. Breakfast was also excellent with a large selection of either the cold buffet or from the menu.
A hidden gem of a hotel I have every intention of going back. Especially in the summer to sit out with those views would be a must.
I did a search on line and found this hotel and I am glad I did. (I was in the lakes over night as I am looking at relocating)
The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
I arrived got booked in and when up to my room. I had booked the single room and it was a good size. (no issues with noise from the pub). Tea and coffee making Facilities. (May be a small TV in the room if you did not want to go down to the bar and just chill in your room).
The beer on tap was a good selection I ordered one of their double burgers and have to say it was a cracking burger.
Breakfast was included in the price and it set me up for the day nicely.
Yes I would return.
On arrival we got a warm welcome from the girl behind the bar who quickly checked us in. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. The bar of the pub was bustling with friendly locals who made people staying at the pub very welcome. The bar also served a very well kept selection of real ales along with a good selection of other drinks. The restaurant was excellent. The chef cooked to a very high standard with ample portions of good quality produce. My wife a I ate there both nights of our stay. The breakfasts matched the quality of the evening meals. It was a thoroughly nice long weekend and I would recommend the Black Bull to anyone as I do not think you will be disappointed.
We first stayed here in 1989 and stayed numerous times in the 1990's, in 2001, 2002 and the last time in 2004. It had lost it's edge a little for us in the transition from a privately run and owned hotel to part of a chain (Von Essen). Recent developments, a new owner, and good reviews tempted us back and we were not disappointed! It isn't the same as in the days of Francis and Brian - it never could be - but it is still a unique experience. The position on Ullswater couldn't be better (I'd go for the views alone!), the staff were helpful and friendly, the food was exceptional without following fashion. Sharrow Bay always did things it's own way and that was what made it special. The décor and furnishings suit the house and location superbly and I'm pleased to see the Hotel still dares to be different in that respect. We won't leave it as long before our next visit. It is still Simply the Best!

All aspects of this hotel were very good . In a decent location, however at this time of the year (March) the closest towns , Kirkby Stephen and Brough are very quiet with little going on . Plenty of good, not too strenuous, walking in the near vicinity!
Great accommodation! Comfy beds. Good size family room. Lovely food and very hospitable and helpful owner. She gave us advice on where to eat and provided a delicious home cooked breakfast in the morning. Would definitely come back!
We enjoyed our overnight stay in the cozy comfort of this family run pub which had lots of old world charm. Our hosts, John and Eileen, gave us a very warm welcome. We were provided with a delicious evening meal beside the open fireplace before heading off for a very good night's sleep.
