"Friendly Village Pub"
On arrival we got a warm welcome from the girl behind the bar who quickly checked us in. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. The bar of the pub was bustling with friendly locals who made people staying at the pub very welcome. The bar also served a very well kept selection of real ales along with a good selection of other drinks. The restaurant was excellent. The chef cooked to a very high standard with ample portions of good quality produce. My wife a I ate there both nights of our stay. The breakfasts matched the quality of the evening meals. It was a thoroughly nice long weekend and I would recommend the Black Bull to anyone as I do not think you will be disappointed.

"Well Above Average for the Business Traveller"
I used to stay at this Hotel on a regular (often fortnightly) basis a few years ago as it offered well above average accommodation. I liked its location, which gave a balanced mix of easy access with rural unspoilt views, which is a rare treat for anybody who spends weeks driving up and down the Motorway networks. But what I especially liked was the staff, as they are the entire backbone of this hotel and a credit to its Management, I can't say that i've ever had one negative experience, either previously or indeed during my recent stay, all of the staff are welcoming and friendly and look genuinely happy to welcome you and to check you in, without the fake smiles often painted on at the reception desks of the larger chains. So it was good to make a return to my 'home from home' as I make a return to the life of business travel, and I was happy to see that nothing had changed, and coincidentally i'd even been given my 'old' room back, where I had enjoyed many a happy stay previously. The hotel is generally reasonably peaceful, and even more so if you get an end of corridor room like mine, but in most rooms in the hotel its quiet enough to catch up on paperwork and emails. The rooms are well above a Premier Inn standard, and even the cheaper 'classic' ones are comfortable, spacious, well maintained and almost clinically clean, in fact all of the hotel is clean and comfortable. Wifi is available free of charge (The larger chains can learn a lot from this)

"Cozy and sweet!"
This is not what I expected! It's better! We are from the US, and I was getting married in Scotland to a UK native the day after our stay. We wanted to stay in the Lake District overnight to see the sights. We found the hotel which FYI the name of the place is painted on a little rock.. so it's easy to miss. It was much more cozy than we expected. I was just thinking it was a regular hotel.. nothing fancy. We stayed in the room that had a kitchen, table for six and three beds. (There were three adults and one child in our party.) There was bread, cereal, tea, coffee, milk, juice, jam, croissants, sugar, butter all waiting for us in the room. The bathroom had a hair straightner, hair dryer, shampoo and conditioner. FREE WIFI! (Being from out of the county this was important!) THere was a bookshelf with books and games. There was also a TV..We played cards, ate cheese, bread and had wine that night. Good times! We woke and got ready for our wedding then set off. The lady who owns/runs the place was very sweet. The room is a great stay for an awesome rate.

"Good Hotel"
All aspects of this hotel were very good . In a decent location, however at this time of the year (March) the closest towns , Kirkby Stephen and Brough are very quiet with little going on . Plenty of good, not too strenuous, walking in the near vicinity!

"lovely little B&B with friendly owner"
I stayed here for two nights with my mum and two children. It's a small family run place with about 4/5 rooms. The family room had a double and two singles. Very clean room. The owner, (Helen) was friendly, welcoming and attentive. On arrival she left slips in your room to order cooked breakfast to your request. A selection of cereals and yogurts, toast and jams are also available in the dining room. Couldn't fault her efforts. When she had seen a bottle of wine in our room while making beds etc she put two wine glasses in our room without being asked. Very thoughtful. I thought it was a great base for exploring the District. While there we went to Ulswater, Aira Force, Pooley Bridge, Lowther Castle, Hutton in the Forest, Rheged to name a few. All in easy reach from where we were. We stayed August 2013.

"A quaint 17th century pub in Askham"
We enjoyed our overnight stay in the cozy comfort of this family run pub which had lots of old world charm. Our hosts, John and Eileen, gave us a very warm welcome. We were provided with a delicious evening meal beside the open fireplace before heading off for a very good night's sleep.
