“Comfortable and pleasant for the Diamond District/Central Station”

The hotel more than met my needs. The room was very decent sized by European standards, clean and comfortable. I was on a high floor overlooking the lovely park across the street; the view in the morning, of a cathedral and the park, was great. Staff was helpful and all spoke English. One elevator (of 2) was broken my entire stay and other guests said it had been longer. It wasn't a major inconvenience since the other was quick, but not a great sign. There was a pleasant bar with some food service downstairs, but on my late arrival the first night the kitchen was closed at 10:30 (although advertised to be open later). The location will depend on your needs. The hotel is not in the tourist/nightlife district near the river; the walk there is about 25 minutes (it's a nice walk, though). If you are in Antwerp for business, this is perfect: it sits only a block or two from the Diamond District and the Central Train Station (very handy if you arrive by train, highly recommended as driving is tough here). There are plenty of shops/fast food in this area and a mini-supermarket right on the block, but it gets quiet at night. Hotel parking garage was full when I arrived and they gave me good directions to a commercial lot (not cheap) about 3 blocks away. It was fine but some guys tried to scam me out of my ATM card on the quiet street at 11 PM--not threatening, but not a pleasant welcome to Europe either. Overall the neighborhood seemed safe.

Area recommendations
My itinerary took me all over Belgium and northern France to visit family and old friends. I had read that Antwerp was the least attractive of the area cities for touring, but I must say I loved it. The long modern shopping district (the Meer?) and the downtown Grojtmarket area were loaded with great stores, great street food (waffles, fries, craft beers and handmade chocolate are the local taste) and terrific restaurants of all cuisines that were very busy even late Sunday night. the architecture is magnificent and there are sculptures and fountains everywhere. There are several museums in town, but as my touring day was a Monday, they were all closed. No matter; I visited the multiple old cathedrals, each of which had an art collection rivaling any mid-sized museum. Plus they were free. I could not get into the Rubenshaus but three large Rubens paintings in one cathedral were satisfying! Does the city rival Paris? No! But on my fly-out night, stuck at an airport hotel with nothing around, I chose the 40 minute drive to Antwerp over a shorter ride into Brussels for dinner, because the nightlife was better and more concentrated. Don't go to Belgium and miss Bruges--it is even better than it's reputation with lovely canals and medieval buildings. If you have more time, Ghent was lovely, as was the small resort town of Dinant in the Southeast corner of the country.

“Superb in everyway”

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a warm smile and nothing was a problem. Helpful with local directions and suggestions for eating and going out. The room was just superb. Go and stay at this hotel if you are looking for something really special that is excellent value. I will stay here everytime I am in Antwerp

Area recommendations
I would recommend just getting into the centre of Antwerp, only a 2 min walk, great shops, bars, restaurants and atmosphere. The hotel is also opposite a great park for the joggers. I would also recommend Appleman Restaurant for great food atmosphere and music.

“Hidden dangers in the room!”

Two very dangerous situations in the room: one is a doorstop right by the toilet that is a painful foot destroyer, and is inevitable to hit at some point with your bare feet. The second is a total lack of anti-skid devices in the bathtub, making it dangerously slippery. Both an accident waiting to happen. Reception staff is OK, but a little indifferent. Not really a surprise in a larger city. Breakfast was mediocre at best.

“Great service, ok location”

This hotel had the best frontdesk service we experienced during out European trip (Belgium, Netherlands, France). She was very patient with us and very helpful in directions and recommendation. She went out of her way to help us. The hotel itself was very nice and modern with good size rooms for a European hotel. The only downside to the hotel was that it was located about 10-15 minutes from everything including Metro station, etc which was a little bit farther than I would have liked. Overall, would come back again.

“Well represented on-line”

This modern hotel borders on a beautiful park and is close to all of the shopping in Antwerp. There were elevator issues at the time we were there which were due to be fixed the day we left, but there were some scary rides downstairs! Overall, it was fine...looked like every American hotel room.

Area recommendations
We were touring several areas of Europe and my son was interested in Antwerp as they are known for their fashion houses. Of all the cities we visited, we were the least impressed with Antwerp, with the exception of the beautiful architecture of the train station. It has been turned into a tourist shopping mecca so if that's what you're looking for, you're in luck. We had more fun in Amsterdam and Bruges!

“Greatest shower ever!”

We stayed at hotel with several other couples. On one floor, the wallpaper was completely peeling off the wall- not something I would expect of an upscale hotel. However, the lack of parking and wallpaper issue were overlooked when we got to the small, but comfortable room. Nice large bed with duvet was very comfortable. Teapot, flat screen TV, and the shower was the BEST ever in a hotel! My husband travels a LOT (weekly) and we travel frequently as a family. This was by far the best shower we have experienced! Hard water pressure and nice and hot. If it was a walk in and fully tiled, it would have been perfect, but for the quality of the hotel, it was a great value. We went down to the bar one afternoon and brought up a beer and glass of wine while we were getting ready and the bartender set it up on a nice tray with a nice bowl of nuts and crackers. The front desk staff was helpful and responsive. I stopped by to ask for extra pillows and the housekeeping person was in the room before I got off the elevator! Would recommend and will stay here again- now that we know how the parking works!

Dining
We ate one night at Bourla in town. It was in a beautiful pedestrian area. Walking in it looked quite elegant with large crystal chandeliers and a heavy velvet drapes to keep the wind out. We were casually dressed and wondered if we had made a bad selection, but upon enterening found it to be very comfortable and casual. Definitely a place where people go after work as there is a long, large bar that was very crowded, but within minutes, completely emptied out and we were left with a packed dining room. Our round table sat 8 comfortably and we ordered some house red wine and white wines as well as beers. All were quite good! We all had appetizers of soups, carpaccio, or oysters on the 1/2 shell which were excellent! The only unusual part was that we were only allowed to order 4 different appetizers and 4 different dinners and 4 different desserts (for our party of 8). Not sure why they had this requirement, but our meals all came out at the same time, were all hot and all delicious. It was not a problem for our party, just an unusual request. We all loved the food which was prepared behind a glass window. The entire bill was 45 euro/person which we found VERY reasonable given the quality of foods and the fact that it would have been twice that in Luxembourg where we live!

“Nice Boutique Hotel, I Shall Return!”

Leopold Hotel Antwerp is a boutique hotel that is everything that you would expect, in a good way. The staff was friendly and professional. The rooms were spatious, nicely decorated, nicely kept and very functional. There were little niceties like a free water bottle and free wifi in public areas. It was centrally located, by a nice park with nice landcaping and sculptures. The price in March was very reasonable. The breakfast was fresh and nicely prepared. I will stay there again.

Area recommendations
I recommend going to the city center area and just wandering the streets. The architecture is terrific. The cobblestone streets and mideival architecture provides an excellent experience. There are many dining options and markets for shopping. There is lots to see and experience.

“Not very family friendly”

It should be noted that I am a Canadian living in the Netherlands, so the comments below are from a Canadian perspective. Generally, the hotel was good, with the one exception being the level of customer service. As a young family with a stroller, the hotel is not that child friendly. For example, it is very difficult to make it through the revolving doors with a stroller. It was only on day 3 that one employee mentioned to us that we could use the emergency exit to the side (it could only be opened by a special button). On the first two days, the other employees just watched us struggle with our stroller and remained indifferent to our situation. Although this is just an example, we were not made to feel welcome. Perhaps this is due to cultural differences (i.e., Belgium and the Netherlands are known for having sub-par levels of customer service), or perhaps this is a reflection of the hotel. In any case, be aware of these things if you are travelling with a young family.
