“Not overly impressed”
Check-in process was quite slow due to an antiquated paper system that is operated. We waited 50 minutes for a porter to show us to our room. We'd requested a king size bed and were put in a twin room with short beds, my husband is 6'4", so he couldn't fit in the bed. The beach side bungalows do not have air conditioning and the ceiling fan was too high and slow to give any movement of air. At peak times of day, the shower is a dribble of water if you are lucky. Food in the restaurants was average, waiting staff were excellent. Grounds and beach are beautiful. The hotel is ok if you are not looking for anything too luxurious.
“Hawksbill Bay - A place to get away from it all”
We were searching for a place to get away from it all and we definitely succeedded. Hawksbill had four beautiful (one near the lunch bar, one by Honeymoom Cove, one used mostly by the locals, one clothing-optional) beaches, great staff and the booze was free-flowing If you want lots of activities and top-notch food, this is not the place for you. Don't get me wrong, the food is OK, just not great. There is only one TV in the whole place, (I don't believe there are any rooms with TV's). The facilities are adequate, but starting to show their age. They could use a fresh coat of paint and some new beach chairs. It would also be nice to have a bar near the beach at Honeymoon Cove or the clothing-optional beach. Overall, if you want to get away from the laptop and Blackberry, and you're not looking for five-star food, this is the perfect place for you. We'd go back again in a minute.
“Island Paradise”
Hotel had good staff, was in a great location and met or exceeded all our expectations. I would suggest everyone try Hawksbill by Rex Resorts. Overall the best vacation ever.
“Location, location, location”
We have just returned from a two week break from what can only be described as the most peaceful and tranquil Caribbean resort I know of. We had read the reviews however also managed to read between the lines and realise that if we wanted the all singing, dancing, glossy, hi-spec holiday then we should be looking to book ourselves in somewhere else! The staff were attentive and sincere and nothing was too much trouble. We had booked ourselves in to a beach club room but managed a peek at the bungalows which looked ok and people seemed happy with the superior seaview rooms as well. Maid service was daily and fresh flowers were left daily. The grounds were superb; well maintained and very tropical. We missed Sylvie's garden tour which seemed to be very popular. The beaches (all four of them!) were superb and the Hawksbill is the only hotel on the island to have access to four beaches. The food was also very good and we had no trouble in choosing a 3 course breakfast lunch or supper. Freshly cooked every day with a good variety. There is talk of development and the future of the hotel with concerns at low occupancy however with a return visitor rate of 80% there must be something very right about the hotel else why would people return? It is reported that some of the bungalows need updating and we have been told that this is ongoing as is the improvement of the pool area although with four beaches who needs a pool? We would definately look to return
“Hawksbill surprise!”
We were delayed by the recent snowfall and unable to get a flight for five days.....so stuck in Antigua we decided to find somewhere else to stay! We took a gamble on Hawksbill and boy did it pay off! We were greeted by the lovely reception staff and never looked back. After a week of sport and partying Hawksbill's peace and quiet suited us down to the ground. A four day stay there was ample for us and just what we needed before getting home! The location is fabulous, a choice of beaches...and we even tried the clothes-optional beach for a giggle one morning! The food was good, the drinks the same and all in all a fab stay! Bear in mind we were both in a Caribbean languid style when we arrived but things were carried out for us quickly and efficiently....a room change to accommodate our request for superking bed, unlocking our safe after we managed to lock all our personals away, etc. We had a great time but other than eating and drinking there wasn't really much to do for us a couple in our 40s.......the hotel has a big clientele of repeat retirees but we still had a giggle with some of the other guests!
“Excellent Value for the Money”
Hawsbill is not a five-star resort, but if there's another hotel in the Caribbean that offers more for the rates it charges, somebody please tell me about it! Here, for half, or less, of what you'd pay for the lowest rate at many "name" resorts, you can get a clean room with a beautiful ocean view, all your meals with good food, vast attractive grounds which include four nice beaches, and courteous service. But if you want "action" -- activities, late-night entertainment, watersports, etc. you'll want to go elsewhere. The guests at Hawksbill are primarily middle-aged or older. And to go anywhere in Antigua that you would want to visit away from the hotel, you'll need to rent a car, or be prepared to spend quite a bit on cab-fare. But that is true of most of Antigua's hotels. Many of Antigua's most expensives resorts are literally miles away (on narrow, pothole-filled roads) from anything else. My advice would be that if you've done your research and have decided that Antigua is somplace you'd like to visit, and, like my wife and I, you don't have unlimited money to spend, then give Hawksbill very serious consideration.
“Home from home”
Yet another excellent holiday at the Hawksbill, where the staff go that extra mile to ensure your stay is enjoyable. Not sure what they put in the water, but after 10 visits,we still want more!!! Beautiful location - don't think it can be bettered
“Great time”
Great time at the resort, staff was great, food and drink was great and most everything connected to resort was great. BUT don't try to find the place by yourself. The Island has bad roads and are confusing with no road signs out and about. People are kind but hire a cab to go anywhere. Shopping is not that great it is better on St. Martin. I would go back to the resort but skip anything else to do with the island.
“Mediocre”
On the positive side, the hotel setting was very nice. Meals were quite good and the portions plentiful. Drinks were ok, but you won't find premium brands despite what you may read. The beaches were quite nice though there were surprisingly few beach umbrellas available - and no beach attendant to provide chairs/drinks, etc. And while there was a booth for snorkeling equipment and kayaks, the amount of equipment available was disappointingly small. The biggest negative was the service. Outside of David and one or two of the wait staff, the collective attitudes of the others was disgraceful. Seldom did we see a smile or hear a kind work, and despite our "thank you's" to everyone, the term "you're welcome" is apparently unknown to this group. Finally, be careful of the room you book - most rooms do not have air conditioning. And the beach front rooms, though considered high end, were not that comfortable and were located in an isolated area of the resort - we initially booked such a room but changed to a second floor room with balcony at the other end of the beach. For the price it was a decent enough value, but all in all, not good enough for a return visit.
“My second home!!”
Yet again, another superb holiday at the Hawksbill. The staff could not do enough to ensure that mt husband had a 60th to remember. Despite what must be a worrying time for the staff, they did not let it show. This hotel must be allowed to carry on as it is - perfect for those that seek peace!
