AQUA Ferskvandscenter - freshwater centre in Silkeborg. Randers Regnskov - rain forest. Here at Kongensbro - where the highway between Aarhus and Viborg crosses the river Gudenaa - there has been an inn since 1663 when King Frederik the 3rd gave the chief administrative officer of the area Ebbe Gyldenstjerne the right to run an inn at the bank of the Gudenaa. The present inn is from 1949 and today it is run by Christian Andersen who is the 3rd generation of the Andersen innkeeper family at Kongensbro Kro.Kongensbro Kro has always been known for its good food right from the French cuisine to homemade rissoles and hash. It was Christian Andersens grandmother Else Andersen who together with her husband Hans Andersen founded the inns tradition for good food. She published no less than 8 cookbooks with inn courses and regional recipes and she took part in several TV programmes. Formerly the inn was known as a bargemans inn because the Gudenaa used to be the most important transport route through mid-Jutland. The cargoes were transported in large barges which were drawn by men and horses following the bargemans path along the river. Close to Kongensbro a so-called Swot Pejer is preserved. It is a black-tarred oak pole which stood at the place where the river swung. To prevent the barges from being drawn into the riverbank the men had to make a bent pull and this was achieved by putting the rope around the pole.
