“First timer to Europe and Amsterdam”

Came to Europe and Amsterdam for the first time and did the trip solo. The staff and the Vondelpark were amazing, helpful, firendly and were a big part in making my trip a sucess. The location near the VondelPark was great and the neighbor was an outstanding location for a first timer like me. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and when I go back will stay here again if possible.

Area recommendations
Any and all neighborhood are wonderful, Amsterdam is wonderful, I fell in love with the entire city.

“Saisifed, but somewhat far from the central part of town and a little pricey”

Compared to other hotels we saw while in Amsterdam, this one appeared to be nice for the price. Rooms were satisfactory. Took a little getting used to though, as this was the first time in Europe. If your planning on exploring the central part of Amsterdam exclusively, you might be better off getting a better located hotel, however, if you aren't afraid to take a reasonable taxi (get the ones that say TCA on them or you WILL get ripped off as the others don't meter their distance and charge at a minimum twice as much) or if you take public transportation, then the distance isn't an issue at all. Overall I'd give the hotel a good rating, but I'd personally seek out somewhere cheaper next time as you shouldn't be spending a lot of time at the hotel anyway and could better spend the money saved on other things.

Area recommendations
There are areas for everything. Just grab a good map or look up what you seek on Google and it'll map of locations for you with ease.
Getting around
If it's your first time, your better of taking transportation of some kind and walking. Renting a car would seem a very bad choice. you can rent bikes for cheap, however, if you don't "get with the program" very fast on how they ride around the city, your going to get hit, run over, or otherwise generally irritate people, same goes for driving. We figure the best way to easily tackle not getting lost would be to bring a GPS of some sort and mark out where you wanna go and walk.
Other
Things there don't really get up and going until 9am. Public transportation is great and a good deal if you can figure out the routes. The people in Amsterdam can speak English quite well, however don't expect that they will know everything you are saying. If you want to learn things about the area and what you should do, don't be afraid to have conversations with people and ask their opinion as most people seem more than willing to give you their advice, without the touristy strings attached. I would recommend against buying anything from so called gift shops. They are overpriced and obviously only set up to snag tourists who don't know better. There are no big stores here like in the U.S., so if you need something specific, don't be afraid to ask what store to go to. Also, just as an FYI, The City is NOT family oriented (as if the red light district and coffee shops everywhere aren't a big clue). You will notice that you don't see very many family's or children around while you are there. while we never looked to deeply into it, most family's live on the outskirts of the city.

“Great location”

The Vondel park district was very pleasant - if a little lacking in colour. Classy apartment blocks - traditional in style - and the attractive Vondelpark itself - created a peaceful - some would say staid! - ambience. We walked everywhere; to the Museums, the Concertgebouw (about 10mins)and into the main canal districts - doing the latter, of course, takes energy! There was the oprion of the excellent number 2 tram, of course, Found a couple of good restaurants for both breakfast and dinner within 5 minutes of the hotel. Accommodation was well kept and the staff efficient. Bar prices were - to us - massive. One quibble: the management refused to sell us water from the front desk - though soft drinks were on display there; they insisted we pay Eu6.50 for a litre bottle from the bar to take up to our room; on the other hand, they cheerfully produced a conversion electrical plug for me to borrow. We'd most likely go back; overall our Amsterdam 4 night trip was brilliant.

Area recommendations
Amsterdam is a compact city and you can visit all areas easily; the Museum area around the Concergebouw is wonderful for Van Gogh, Rembrandt and the boys - and the concert hall experience quitre exceptional for performance and acoustic. The whole of the Grachtengordel is delightful to hang out in; the Red Light district is sleazy and touristy - quite sad, really: but perhaps it's just me that's sad...Don't be fooled into thinking you can see the sights and absorb the feeling of the city in a couple of days; we had 3 full days and felt bereft to be leaving with so much undone. We'll certainly go back
When to go
We went in Mid-November and were blessed with cold-cool bright weather; the museums were busy but not frantically so. Leaving the Anne Frank house until later in the day peoved a good move at tis time of the year.
Other
If you're from the UK watch out for the traffic: it's the variety coming along on the "wrong" side that takes you by surprise - you could be wtachful for trams but forget about the bike/scooter lanes!

“Just fine”

Given the location of the hotel (Amsterdam South), I had expected more in terms of condition, maintenance and comfort of the hotel room. The room was small, poorly ventilated, and had wall and ceiling stains. The Internet connection was painfully slow, the TV programming laughable, and the breakfast option too expensive. I will recommend for short (2 or 3 day) stays but not for anything longer. Given the mediocre quality, I would say this hotel is somewhat expensive. Nonetheless, the location and surrounding neighborhood are splendid.

“Satisfactory”

After staying in the more £$ Eden Amsterdam American Hotel for a couple of evenings before (for business), this hotel didn't seem quite up to scratch but I would still recommend to a friend. Positives were the staff we very helpful, the breakfast was good and the location was pieceful and quiet vs the Eden Hotel, the number 2 tram also stopped within a 100 meters of the hotel entrance (and this goes straight to central station). Down sides were the general conditions of the room could be better. e.g. small holes in the wall, mildew in corners of the bathroom, loose loo roll holder etc. All minor things but they add up (something the hotel can put right at a small cost anyway).

Area recommendations
Museum area was good for us as we like some quiet at night. It was easy to travel in and out of the main city using the tram.
Getting around
Use the tram to get around. Cheap (when buying >1 day use) and easy to use. Don't forget to swipe your card on the way in and out of the tram as your card can be blocked if you forget too many times!

“Lovely location just away from the action.”

I stayed at the Park Plaza Vondelpark with a pal on a lads weekend to Amsterdam and couldn't really fault the hotel apart from my only slight dissapointment was that the room didn't really look like the modern rooms pictured on the website, maybe we just got unlucky and didn't get one of the modernised rooms? With the mouldy silicone and aged bathroom tiles my impression was that the hotel was 3* standard although this could of been higher in the newer rooms? Another fault although minor was the noise of the door continuously slamming at the stairs next to then lifts, not great when you've had a late night and you are trying to sleep in for a bit, it was just about bearable for two nights, any longer and I'd be asking for another room. The staff on reception were really friendly and helpful, you couldn't ask for more from them. The reception was modern and furnished with funky dome chairs hanging from the ceiling. Location wise it's great, a 10 minute tram ride out of the City on line two and Emmastraat tram station is only a minutes walk away from the hotel. It's also situated in a nice upmarket residential area with a couple of shops nearby, Vondelpark is two minutes away and well worth visiting for a leisurely stroll when you want a change from the canals and bridges. I'd recommend this hotel and would stay there on my next visit in the hope that I got a modernised room as everything else was great.

“would go there again”

A very nice hotel in a quiet and safe neighbourhood. Very easy to get to from the airport by bus and then very easy to get to other parts of Amsterdam with the tram no.2 up the road. The staff were very polite and always had a smile. The breakfast buffet was great as there was such a choice. you can breakfast up till 12 on Sundays so that is good! Very quiet in the evening . the room was nice,we had a superior rom at the back and it suited us fine. Wifi in the room and loads of channels on the TV. Room a bit too hot sometimes and there was a ever so slight smell of sewer but hardly noticeable. Would stay there again possibly with the kids as the neighborough was great. Loved travelling on the tram with our Chip card

Area recommendations
the albert cydcup market , the museum quarter, vonderpark, the botanical gardens. the hop on hop off canal boat is great too for tired feet. Saphaarti park has great cafes near by
Shopping
On Sundays many shops close so get your shopping out of the way on the saturday (try the markets they are great) and then do the museum bit on the Sunday
Dining
Dine early as it gets very busy and then most restaurants in the quieter districts close earlyish.

“Great location, but...”

I stayed in the Executive Suite for two evenings in the middle of October. I found the hotel staff to be incredibly amiable and willing to do whatever to ensure I was comfotable. I did find a few issues with the hotel room; 1.) Light bulbs were burnt out in several standing lamps, 2.) Sheets were wet on the bed, which made for a very cold sleeping arrangement, 3.) Shag carpet gave me the heeby jeebies, definitely didn't look clean. I rented a bicycle too while I was there- the bike was incredibly beat up. The breaks and the bike lock barely worked. Overall I rated this hotel a '3', but with a little extra effort by the hotel management (ensuring rooms are in excellent condition- cleanliness/comfort/etc., proper maintenance of all extra services offered) I would have rated it a 5. You can't beat the location!
