“Basic”
The communal areas were reasonably OK but the room was a different matter entirely. The room was small and in poor condition. The lining in the base of the shower had broken up and was unsightly and rough. The smoke detector was hanging loose from the ceiling. The keycard mechanism wasn't working properly and, having got me back into the room, the solution was "You're not planning to go out again this evening are you? That's OK then. We'll sort it out tomorrow". The menu was very limited but I must say that the steak was cooked very much to my liking. The cooked breakfast from the buffet, though, was cold. The hotel served its purpose as somewhere low-cost to sleep for one night. I wouldn't want to stay there for any longer period.
“Excellent Value”
The hotel was not located centrally to the city as per the discription However the Tram and buses (which run through the night), were excellent!! The breakfast was good value for money and I would recommend adding it for your stay. Overall we were very pleased with this hotel and if I was looking for another cheap city break to Amsterdam would not hesitate in staying there. The taxi is cheaper from the airport than from the city centre.
“Worn”
Have actually stayed at the HEM before about five years ago, that was the reason i went back. the best i can say for the hem now is that its in desperate need of a referb particularly outside, it all looks to overgrown and the walkways have sunk in part, to the point were they need relaying so as not to be a danger
“A hostel in a ghetto... Miles from town and rough as a badgers backside”
Really scruffy hotel, room looks nothing like the pictures. If you've ever seen videos of communist Russia in the 70's then you get the picture. Truly the grim
“Very enjoyable stay”
Enjoyable weekend stay in November 2011. Approx 10 min in taxi from airport which cost 30euros for 4 of us(from the official taxi rank at airport)Placed in a residental area but very quiet & felt safe at all times.Hotel staff very friendly & welcoming & speak good english & will supply a local & amsterdam map for free. Nice spacious, clean rooms with clean towels daily, TV with plenty of channels, no kettle in room, so take own if thats important. Not much view out of window but only there to sleep ! Nicer than a Travellodge but bit below a Premier Inn. Hotel snack & bar' area is expensive (2.50 for a coffee in a paper cup) but at least you can get a snack & a drink on arrival especially if its late. Lidl store is 100 metres away (turn right out of hotel, under bridge & its there on right). Tram (No2) straight into Amsterdam Centre is 5 min walk away (turn left out of hotel, then left again & in 50 meters in front you'll see the main road & tram stop is there. 24hr tram ticket which you buy on the tram from the driver / conductor costs 7euros for 24 hrs/ other tickets available (funny system of getting on at front or middle & get off at rear of tram !).Takes approx 15 mins on tram to Amsterdam Centre and they run every few mins-never waited long, Is too far to walk to centre !.Think last tram back from Centre is approx 12.30 at night but check. Main highway is next to the Hotel but IS quiet-good high barrier system in place-even stood outside you dont hear the traffic !.
“HEM Amsterdam”
The room smelt, reception desk was not helpful. The area the hotel is located in is not safe for tourists.
“Basic although still adequate”
The premises are devoid of any frills. The reception desk is busy but attentive. The place is sponsored mostly by youngsters with a taste for marihuana smoking, although in a pacific attitiude. The rooms are clean and basic. There is a TV set. The bathroom is devoid of any modern apppliances ( hair dryer, etc) and bleakly lit but is clean and towells are good and changed daily. Te surrounding area is quiet although desert at night, but we did not sense any danger while walking at night. If you are not a demanding customer you may think it is a fair choice for an inespensive place., .
“Not impressed”
Hotel was cheap but even for that price hotel personnel should b nicer for customers. My room had view for some inside room and we didn't have a window just a glass. Additionally I heard a flushing water from other rooms, it was really noisy that I couldn't sleep and next day need to buy ear plugs!!!!Receptionist wasn't nice and helpful.I will never back there!!!!
“Recomended for first-timers in Amsterdam”
I have to commend the hotel staff, especially room cleaners. Guests are mostly young people from all over the world, but everyone is welcome. The price of breakfast is maybe too expensive, but there are a few food corners near the hotel. Separate lift for the 4th floor is too slow, but it's amusing. We have enjoyed our 4 days there.
“Not impressed, rehab hostel right by hotel, vagants and drug addicts begging money for a bed for the”
On arrival kept waiting 25 mins to check in while the receptionists chatted on the phone. The room was clean.Maid cleaned the room every day and provided clean towels. Bathroom had a shower that was in an alcove so that the shower had to be removed from the holder so that the water could be put onto your body to wash,[have never come accross this arrangement before].The bathroom was a wetroom but the whole room was wet after a shower, which meant that you had to walk on a wet floor to use the toilet after a shower.Would not be suitable for children or people unsteady on their feet due to danger of slipping and falling. Windows were fixed shut although there was a balcony/common area outside. This meant that the air con had to be kept on constantly in while we were in the room as the bathroom was windowless too .Gave us sore throats and made us cough. Lighting was very poor ,we could not see the colour of the carpet as the room was so dark.even with all lights in room on. No tea or coffe making facilities in room,no hair drier. Travel lodges in UK better. Surrounding area run down, near to a rehab hostel for homeless. Near to tram stop, easy to get to main town centre.
