“Good, but lacking in the details”
We just spent 9 nights at the Lloyds Baia Hotel in Vietri sul Mare. The hotel hangs onto a cliff overlooking the sea, and has its own private beach and elevator to the beach. We got a larger than normal room with a king bed and a cot since there were three of us. The room was nicely finished and the beds were comfortable. There were a couple of downsides. First off, the hanging shower in the tub leaked like mad at the connection, and more importantly, the plastic holder for the shower head was half broken off, which made it difficult to keep the shower head up in the shower position. The other issue was with the phone. The "message" light was always on and there was no way to turn it off. We asked for wake-up calls several days, but never received them, although the Front Desk said that they called and no one answered. On the Tuesday of our stay I asked the Front Desk to fix the shower and phone, and they said that they would, but no one ever came during our stay. The other downside of the hotel is that the Front Desk staff were often nearly rude with us, perhaps because they spoke little English. The breakfasts were the usual for tourist hotels in the region - acceptable but uninspired. It appeared that most of the guests were Italians who were there to use the beach. There were surprisingly few other non-Italian guests. The hotel is a few minute walk to Vietri and a 10 minute bus ride to Salerno. Overall, the hotel wasn't bad, but it could have been better.
“Great terrace”
I personally wouldnt visit this hotel for a beach holiday or for a long time. We had been on the Amalfi coast for a week and spent the night there before catching the train from Salerno. Staff helpful, great breakfast which was included.Room great. Nice views one way over the coast, our room was over the port which I didn't mind.It was quiet. Beautiful terrace. Pool empty and in need of alot of work. It was a nice place to stay. It is a 500m walk from Vierti Sul mare.
“beware mosquitos”
hotel was not easy to find via gps....we actually stumbled upon it only because i knew it was on the cliffs above the sea. we were eaten alive by mosquitos! over 50 bites between the 2 of us! so bad that we left after days (stay was for 4 days). staff was not very helpful at all....no one told us we needed a voucher for the beach even after we told them were were headed down and took the shuttle. had to also ask about the internet. just altogether a disapointment.
“Good price - but there's a reason.”
As noted by a previous reviewer, the hotel is undergoing an extensive refurbishment, with work going on EVERYWHERE, from the beach below to the roof above. The swimming pools are full of scrap materials, there is no direct access to the private beach, rooms are being freshened up, the car park is a partial building site with a daily lottery to get a space. The interior is suffering even where work isn't taking place, with doors being left open to service areas, dirty foot prints on the carpets and a slightly grubby feeling in certain areas. The room we were given was obviously the one saved for "cheapskates" as it was at the back end of beyond with a minute balcony (more of a window ledge really) overlooking the port of Salerno, which works 24 / 7. However, there is always a reason why a four star hotel in one of the nicest parts of the world is offering rooms at such competitive rates and I have to say that the above didn't spoil our holiday too much - and with some experience of logistics, I found the port fascinating! Having said all that, the hotel was comfortable with great staff, good food, a marvellous terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea and a generally friendly atmosphere. By all means visit Hotel Baia, but bear in mind that there is a reason why it is cheap. When finished, it will be a superb hotel - but I'm sure the prices will reflect this!
“Nice hotel but in the middle of refurb”
Its a nice hotel but when we stayed there (mar 2011) the place was under refurbishment with sounds of drilling, banging etc from early morning till 5pm. The two pools - Filled with rubble The private beach - Filled with trash The lift to the beach - out of order. And only way to get to the beach was a drive or bus journey. The refurb is supposed to be complete in Jun 2011, after which I'd probably give it 4/5 stars. But until then I'd give it 1/5 stars.
