“Amalfian experience”
Amalfi is the best location to cover Salerno to Pozitano. The hotel, if you are taking a room with the sea view, is in an exiting location. However: 1. Don't take half board- the dinner is an expensive disaster. 2. Is too expensive even without the dinner. Good things, on top of the view: Shuttle to/ from Amalfi several times per day Stop of the SITA bus in front Parking Good and efficient reception people
“Beautiful views, good price, great memories”
My husband and I stayed for 3 nights and wanted to stay longer. The hotel is a destination in itself. While it is a short ride from the centre of Amalfi, if you can plan your days around the bus schedule, you will love it! (The SITA buses also run frequently.) We didn't have a car and parking in Amalfi would have been difficult anyway. (early Sept) We had dinners at the hotel - lovely, on the balcony. We also strolled up to Pogerole and had dinner (an inexpensive and good dinner) at La Capannina. The walk into Amalfi is worth a try - lots of stairs, but you get a better feel for life on the cliffside. We never tried the hotel beach and used the public beach instead - though many seemed to like the hotel beach. Annie at reception (spoke english from Brooklyn) was a delight. She helped us with our trip to Pompeii, arranged a guide & car. She offered good advice. Our lunch at the hotel was outstanding. We sat overlooking Amalfi (through the Grotto). The service was excellent and the Citrus Risotto a unique treat. The pool is large, but not heated and you will want to swim when the sun is high. (It was cooler than the sea.) The room was large; all have balconies. The view fantastic. wifi in the lobby and bar areas. The decor is slightly dated, but the atmosphere in the evening is nice, people watching tv or playing cards or chatting in the bar area or on the porch. We enjoyed meeting other guests. We might go back; met guests who stayed there 25 years ago & keep coming back!
“You are paying for the view - nothing else”
The view from all of the hotel rooms is fabulous. But that is the only thing this hotel has going for it! It is in a poor location ... while it is high up on the cliff in order to give a great view, it is a long way from town (or anything else for that matter) and the shuttle service is very unrealiable. The "private beach" that is supposed to be included in the hotel package is not private, nor is it near the hotel ... it is 5 miles away and requires either a car or hotel shuttle (again, very unrealiable) and you have to pay extra to use it. While the hotel was very clean, it is very old and has not been renovated in a long time. For the first two days of our stay there was no hot water, and the air conditioning barely provided any relief from the heat. The staff was very hit-and-miss. While most of them spoke great english, many of them were very unfriendly and nobody was willing to do anything to help you. We brought a bottle of wine with us to celebrate our first night on the coast, but did not bring a corkscrew ... however, the bar staff refused to let us use one of theirs, nor would they open it for us ... they insisted that we had to call room service for which they charged us 5 Euros to come and open the bottle. Then we received a nasty note the next day telling us that they strongly discouraged people brining outside food or drink to the hotel! When we complained about having no hot water, they did not seem too concnerned. They told us to try again later!
“Amazing sea view, excellent service, but in need of a refurb”
Hotel is not in Amalfi itself, but in a village (Pogerola) 4km uphill from the town. This is not a problem as the hotel offers a free shuttle bus to the town centre & back 8 times a day (4 in the morning & 4 in the late afternoon). There are also public buses all day & evening (1 to 2 per hour). All rooms (I think) have a sea view and most have a balcony. The sea view is spectacular and stretches for miles of just sea and sky, with the hills around the sides. This is because the hotel is so high up though, it's a few km to the actual sea! It has a restaurant offering a fairly limited and pricey set menu that changes each day (3 or 4 options incl 1 vegetarian choice). The food is pretty good but there is limited choice and short opening hours (12.30 - 2.30 for lunch, and 7 - 9pm for dinner). There is also a bar open all day and evening. The swimming pool (outdoor, unheated) was quite nice, a reasonable size, very deep most of the way along though. Amazing view from there too. Breakfast (7 - 10am) is a big buffet and offers cereals, bread rolls, croissants, pastries & cakes, cold meats & cheeses, yogurt &fruit, plus scrambled eggs. The rooms are large but decor and furnishings are a bit dated in places and we had a few small problems with the door lock, the bed and the TV, although these were resolved. The staff were very helpful. They don't tell you that there are 2 restaurants in the village (further uphill, only a 10-min walk) which are worth a visit. Overall recommended.
“Wonderful Views”
We were upgraded to a garden suite on arrival - huge rooms with jacuzzi bathroom, large terrace overlooking the view of Amalfi, and extremely quiet. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and the location was excellent - only a bus ride into town and away from the hubub. The gardens were a bit neglected and the swimming pool full of flies and wasps, but overall it was a great place to stay. We will go back again soon!!
“Amazing view”
I would recommend this hotel to everyone, its a bit hard to get to because its high on the cliffs{there is a bus anyway} but its so worth it!The view is just amazing, one of the most beautifull coastlines in Europe! N.B.If you fly from Naples dont book your return flight early in the morning because there is no transport to take you there so early!
“A great basis for the Amalfi Coast”
Great scenic setting way up the cliffs with good 10 minute bus connections to/from Amalfi either by hotel van or more frequent local bus service (1E each way). From Amalfi bus/water service to all points worth seeing. Hotel is an older establishment but comfortable and well maintained, and food is good but offerings limited. Hotel away from bustle of tourists, Amalfi night life is limited (which is fine with us) but if you want night life, stay in Sorento which we found too big. We were a 25 person AHI tour (highly recommend) group based at Excelsior and covered the entire coast and islands in 7 days.
“The view from the room is the best in the world.”
Simply excellent for a leisurely stay and a base from which to see the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Pompeii. The hotel staff is terrific. The food is excellent, and dinners are highly recommended. The hotel shuttle is invalable, as I would not dare drive. The walls are a little thin, and next time we will try to stay a little further away from others. I could not recommend it higher otherwise, though.
“Too far from town of Amalfi”
We thought we were staying in the town of Amalfi, but the hotel was up the cliffs in Pogerola. We had to ride in the hotel car down into town, but the driver left over the weekend, so we had to pay for the city bus to take us into town. The views were gorgeous if you don't mind being away from everything.
“Hotel Excelsior Amalfi isolato e tranquillo”
Carente nelle manutenzioni delle camere , forse perchè a fine stagione.

Area:
Amalfi, Italy: A charming cluster of pastel houses, shops, cafés and watchtowers, Amalfi seems little more than a village. However it was a great naval power and a wealthy trading republic in medieval times. Its dramatic setting in jagged cliffs cloaked in vineyards is best seen from a boat. Amalfis star turn is a gorgeous cathedral with great bronze doors and lacy cloisters. The nearby village of Atrani is quiet and pretty, with a fine Byzantine church.
