“Great Getaway!!!”

The hotel was exceptional and the staff were very friendly. We were greeted by a valet who took care of our luggage and assisted us to check in. He then gave us the layout of the room and told us everything we needed to know about the hotel. The pool was lovely and clean, but lounge chairs were a premium. Would recommend you put your towels out BEFORE going to breakfast - which was located on the west lawn (fantastic views and terrific breakfast). The hotel grilled at lunch and you could order fish or meat, a pasta dish or anything off the small menu. The bar was open all day until midnight. Their bartenders were excellent and remembered our room number after the first nite. The town was exactly 20 minute scenic walk, but uphill for a part of the way. The town closes down at 1 p.m. until 5 or 6. Plan accordingly. Dinner starts around 7 at local restaurants and goes until late! I would advise against the Big Red Bus and just walk. Take the boat to the Grotto - but it costs extra to see the grotto (not really worth it). Do the all day boat trip with lunch and swimming/snorkeling. Much better option. This is a great long weekend trip unless you rent a car to get out and about. Loved the hotel...this one or the Carlos V hotel would be an excellent option!

Area recommendations
We would also recommend a trip to Bosa...just south of Algehero. It is much cheaper and a hidden gem!
What to pack
As the locals and tourist tend to dress up a bit for dinner, don't forget a dress (sundress will do) with something other than beach-type flip flops for the ladies and nice shorts or slacks for the guys when heading out for the evening meal. Pack layers - one day it was cloudy, raining and very cool at 10 a.m. and by noon it was clear, sunny and scorching hot!

“Very Nice Stay”

This was our first visit to Sardinia and Alghero and we were looking for someplace that wasn't directly in the center of all the activity and noise but was still within walking distance of the old town and port. The Calabona fit the bill perfectly. The room was clean and modern and in great condition. Included breakfast was good. Notably, the staff was EXTREMELY informative, helpful, and attentive. I would definitely return.

Area recommendations
The old town was quite nice. At this time of year (May) the activity petered out around 9:30 pm, which is fairly early by Italian standards. Clean and safe. Just outside the walls of the old city is the port area that is nice as well. Plenty of food and drink locations of varying prices in both areas. You will be within quick driving distance of the main beach area as well as the Capo Caccia peninsula that has some amazing overlooks and some secluded little beaches.
When to go
May was gorgeous when we went. The weather couldn't have been better: sunny and hot. This is just before the start of the high season so the crowds were small and the retailers were willing to bargain. The downside is that with the smaller tourist population at this time many shops and restaurants close up earlier than they normally would. This didn't present a problem though as the selection was still plentiful.
Getting there
We took the overnight ferry from Genoa to Olbia and picked up a rental car at the airport. This was as nice experience. You can get cabins or seating in airline-type seats in large salons; or like many backpacker, just sleep on the couches and seats in the public areas of the lounge. The driving on Sardinia was fine, though like most of Italy, the residents do drive relatively faster than the tourists. No issues though. The airport in Olbia is also served by many airline connections from several convenient locations throughout Europe.
Must see
Capo Testa at the Northern tip of the island is AWESOME! Stintio is beautiful as well. Capo Caccia is a great area too.

“Can't wait to go back”

The Calbona is an older style hotel and is a little dated but the friendly and helpful staff and the superb location more than make up for the decor. The hotel has a large swimming pool and its own private beach and our room had a balcony over looking the sea and well kept hotel gardens The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the historic centre of the town and main restaurants and bars but the walk along the sea coast into town provides stunning views and is well worth the effort We had booked on a B&B basis so only ate in the hotel once and this was a bit disappointing. The food was nothing special and a bit on the pricey side but during the day the poolside bar offers a good range of drinks, snacks and lunches at a reasonable price The reception staff were particulalrly friendly and helpful and made suggestions about places to visit and things to see on the Island. We loved it and hope to go back sometime soon

Area recommendations
Alghero town has a historic centre with narrow winding streets, towers and churches and the impressive sea walls overlooking the picturesque harbour. A highlight is to sit in one of the many cafes and bars on the sea walls with a chilled glass of wine and watch the beautiful sunsets. Worth taking the "toy train" for a 20 minute tour of the centre and checkout the morning produce market for a fantastic selection of fruit and veg as well as fresh meet and fish Many of the beaches in Alghero and nearby are fantastic and unspolit but avoid the main lido if you don't lke busy and crowded We went on half day trips to Bossa an old medieval town, including a visit to one of the famous nuraghi, ancient and mysterious towers unique to Sardinia. We also visited the beautiful Stinti beach and did the open-top bus tour to Cappo Cachia, site of the famous Neptune Caves June was a brilliant time to visit because everywhere was still green and lush and Sardinia offers fabulous countryside as well as white sandy beaches and interesting historical features
Getting there
Not many flights direct to Alghero so we went from London to Milan on Alitalia and changed planes - didn't cost much more or take much longer abd thgis gave us flexibility on dates
What to pack
Hot in the day but Sardinia is quite breezy so a cardigan or jacket for the evening

“The nicest, most helpful staff!!!!”

The hotel was very nice and clean. Located on a private beach and 20 minutes walk into town. Great place for families. The outdoor breakfast cafe was breathtaking. I can't wait to go back!

Traveller's tip
Take the all day boat ride offered at the dock. You can swim and dive for 8 hours. They even prepare a 3 course meal for you on the boat. A very chill and relaxing way to spend the day.

“Not a bad place”

Clean, generally friendly, with a great pool and good breakfast. We did have our sandals and one of our T-shirts stolen/missing though which spoilt things a bit.

“Great hotel for relaxing”

The staff at Calabona are wonderful, friendly and helpful and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The room was a good size and very clean, with a balcony overlooking the sea. Breakfast was great with a large selection and good coffee. The hotel is a short walk to the main town where there are lots of good restaurants and shops. If you want a relazing holiday in the sun with a clean pool and close beach this is for you.

Traveller's tip
Hire a car or scooter to reach some of the other beaches, the drive to Neptunes Grotto is worth it for the views of the island and sea

“More of a Group Hotel”

A bit outside of the old town of Alghero, the Calabona is by itself (no other hotels, restaurants, etc.). It seems to cater more to groups than individuals. The swimming pool is not heated. The facilities are fine and the staff is friendly. A 10-minute walk brings you into the old town.

3 volte abbiamo pranzato: cibo e prezzo piu o meno OK, a cena mai in albergo. (Pero con brutto tempo o freddo si mangia nel ristorante che si trova quasi in cantina! Fortunatamente avevamo una settimana splendida). Insomma: vacanze rilassante, la Sardegna è bella - peccato per l'alloggio

Area recommendations

“Ottima posizione, camera attrezzata male, prezzo esagerato.”

La camera aveva mobilio vecchio. La doccia non funzionava bene. Il personale dell'hotel era gentilissimo. Per il prezzo che ho pagato trovo molto meglio da altre parti (anche se Alghero è comunque unica nel suo genere).
