“Great short stay. Idillic location on the beach with fantastic walks.”

Enjoyed a lovely stay, out of season. Despite weather not being great the hotel has a good spa , gym and indoor pool. Hotel staff were pleasant and the service was good. Could have a better food menu available at the bar and also in the resturant. Would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

“Excellent Holiday”

Very pleased with this hotel, I am a wheelchair user and found the hotel and staff only too eager to help in any way they could. Our room (a garden room) was spacious with plenty room to access, especially bathroom. Door wide enough to get wheelchair through no problem. Although it was nice to have the garden space, (there was a step up to the outside) the sun did not reach it and there was no view but very private and ideal for small children to play. Food very good. Ideal location on beach again with access to the beach via a lift, although it would be difficult to get on to the sand if you were wheelchair bound.

“Would go again to this hotel.”

We had stayed there before and therefore knew before this trip what to expect. Have been for 15 years and thoroughly recommend Pestana Hotel Group. enjoy tennis and some superb restaurants in Alvor, particularly if one likes fish.

“Wouldn't give this 5 stars”

The hotel was nice, but I don't think it warrants 5 stars, the room was ok but in need of refurbishment. The robes supplied were dirty and weren't replaced when asked. The Gym didn't open until 8 and this wasn't due to waiting staff as it was unattended. There was an additional charge to use Wi-Fi in the hotel. Most of the staff were really nice, but talking to one of the women on reception was like getting blood out of a stone, she gave one word answers for the most part.

“Not Quite 5 Star”

Lovely hotel in superb location. Unfortunately facilities in room are in need of updating. Mini bar is no longer operational. There are no drink making facilities in the room and the TV just does not work very well with very poor reception. The location and pool facilities more than make up for these shortcomings. Set above the beach there is a lift available if the steps are too difficult. Plenty of eating places in the vicinity of the hotel and the town is only 5 minutes by car.

“Smashing Hotel on the Beach”

This is a lovely hotel with plenty of room, right on the beach. It has all you would expect from a hotel of its class and was particularly quiet while we were there at the end of June because there was a conference going on, meaning that the rooms were occupied but the pool and bars were not. The beach is beautiful, exceptionally clean and if you don't want to laze around all day you can walk the two-three miles to other end where few people are about. The sand is great for families and there were lots of castles to be built. There are also a couple of beach bars hidden away in the rocks next to the hotel. Hotel prices are steep and so many people were not drinking in the bar. We took a taxi ride to Alvor harbour where there are eight or ten good restaurants at reasonable prices.

Alvor for the restaurants and food.
Getting there
We used the shuttle transfer service which was very good but don't forget to read the small print and confirm the bookings before you go and when you are coming back.
What to pack
Beach wear and plenty of sunscreen as it was in the mid-thirties when we went at the end of June.

“Great Beach”

What a special setting! The beach area is lovely - beautiful rocks and lovely calm Atlantic waters. It is very carefully maintained and it shows.

“Fantastic Stay”

We visited during May 2011 We thoroughly recommend this hotel and will be going back again next year. We would highlight the excellent service from all staff members, quite the best I have experienced. Location of the hotel is outstanding and the views from our hotel balcony were nothing short of breath taking. Local restaurants are well worth a visit. “Windy but pleasant”

The hotel was everything you would like but it was cold - the wind was quite harsh and although it was very sunny and very hot, the wind made it quite difficult to enjoy. The hotel was great - the pool was lovely, the staff were very kind and helpful and all the amenities were great. The breakfast was very good, the evening buffet was good - however, I would say that it was very expensive for what it was. It was quite difficult to try and get the "value for money" aspect right. There wasn't as much choice as there should have been or as much as I was expecting. I would have put the hotel at 4 star, rather than 5 star. I wasn't able to explore the local area, but everyone said it was beautiful.

“Beautiful hotel in beautiful location. 3rd visit and will be returning again!”

Beautifully situated hotel overlooking beach. Quiet and peaceful hotel with amazing breakfasts. Rooms good size and clean. Staff and service excellent. My 3rd visit in 3 years - will definitely be returning again.

Area recommendations
Alvor is a lovely, small fishing village with a variety of restaurants specialising in fresh fish. Not many shops but enough to wander round en route to dinner. A very peaceful place to chill out and relax.
Shopping
Not much in the way of shopping but given Alvor is a small village we didn't expect a town or city centre offering of shops. Alvor is only half an hour from Lagos which has many shops.
Dining
Plenty of fresh fish restaurants. In addition to the wide range of fresh fish available I'd recommend the chicken piri-piri and chicken kebabs. The local marinated carrots are scrummy too!
