we were made very welcome on a cold and wet night- offered the chance to upgrade our room which we didn't need as we were staying only one night. The family running the hotel were excellent and even provided an overnight garage for our MGB Roadster which was leaking due to the heavy rain. Would definitely recommend.

I was there for the walking, and this was pretty much ideal, situated on the edge of the busy pilgrimage village of St Jean Pied de Port. There is a pool, and the appartments all have patios. I had a big family flat, complete with kitchen, to myself! Visitors need to be aware that the reception only has limited hours, and one must ring if one is checking in late, so one can be given the code to collect the keys. The Residence does not serve breakfast, but each flat has its kitchen; or there are numerous cafes in the village a few minutes' walk away. There is also a Lidl very close by on the main road! Not to be sniffed at if you need basic supplies urgently! Pricing very competitive indeed, good value for a single like me, outstanding for a family of four.
Absolutely perfect, could not have been better. They were ready for expedited check-in, made checkout easy,. Their breakfast was super. Location of hotel is perfect, inside city wall, had keys out for check-in...this place is absolutely tops!

The hotel is in a central village location in Saint-Michel, about 4km outside of St Jean Pied De Port. Outstanding restaurant menu and quality dinner service, we were lucky to sit outdoors in the evening sun on the terrrace overlooking a charming river and stunning Basque Region hills and scenery. Slightly noisy and annoying road traffic and local dogs barking through the night, but not bad enough to prevent a positive review of a nice hotel run by a charming couple.

Positive in every way, remote quiet location, beautiful countryside, hiking, wonderful staff including the owners, historical buildings, sleep to the sound of the stream, drive to the breathtaking views of the Iraty highlands, or do tourist shopping in Saint Jean Pied de Port

"Rural base in Paye Basque with good accessibility."
Mendi Alde is actually a collection of buildings which make up the hotel in the pleasant Basque village of Osses. The restaurant provides a good standard of cuisine, with outdoor areas onto a garden as well as a bar. The price of the stay was quite expensive - the most of any of our touring stops along the Pyrenees - but this may reflect the popularity of Paye Basque, particularly in July. Osses is situated in a flat valley bottom surrounded by tall hills and within short striking distance of the higher mountains and the Spanish border, as well as a comfortable drive to the coastal resorts. It is quite idyllic in its situation but appears also to be on a busy local commuter route, despite its very rural disposition. be careful when walking along the 'main' road - cars can suddenly appear from around the corner! We also visited some local villages - the architecture resembles Switzerland more than France and the Basque churches are unique internally. St-Étienne and St-Jean-pied-de-port are hill towns well worth visiting 30 mins drive away. If you are travelling eastwards from there you must take the high road through Esterencuby and through the Foret d'Iraty towards Larrau. The scenery is stunning, although the road is narrow and steep at times. Try to take the little road south through St-Jean from Arneguy on the French side - you follow a narrow valley with Spain within spitting distance on the opposite side. Magical.
