“Probably the best hotel in Alcazar”

The only drawback with this hotel is that it is on the other side of town from the railway station. There's a taxi rank outside the station but you may have to drag the driver out of the bar opposite! The hotel itself is modern and, although on a main road, the room I was in was at the back, very quiet, with a balcony overlooking the garden and open air pool. The reception staff were efficient and spoke good English. They also arranged a taxi to get me back to the station on the morning of departure. The room was large and comfortable with a large double bed and the bathroom was immaculate, well-lit and well-stocked. The one slight problem was that I could hear people moving about in the next room, especially footsteps on the wooden floors, and they could probably hear me and my squeaky bathroom door in the middle of the night. The restaurant has an excellent menu. There's a version in English but the translator was not up to the task, so there was a bit of guesswork in selecting dishes. The young barman doubled as the waiter. He was very pleasant and well-presented but his English was not much better than my Spanish. The food was excellent and everything was well-served. Sadly, there was only one other table occupied so there was no real atmosphere. Breakfast offered a good range of juices, cold meats, bread products, conserves etc. with the same waiter in attendance (I assume he gets some time off). I do recommend this hotel if you want to stay in Alcazar.

Area recommendations

I had no idea what to expect in Alcazar and was pleasantly surprised to find an historic town with a maze of narrow streets of brightly-painted houses, quiet squares and ancient buildings. Much of the action of Cervantes' "Don Quixote" takes place around Alcazar. The main sights of interest are the 14th century Tower of the Grand Prior - being restored but open to the public, the churches of St Mary Major and St Francis of Assisi, and the Convent of St Claire. On the west side of town there is a handsome 19th century bullring and a large public park. On a hill outside the town stand three traditional windmills of the type Don Quixote no doubt used to tilt at. I allowed myself two hours to explore the town but it was nowhere near enough. Almost every one of the maze of narrow streets has a sign explaining its connection with some historic person or event, even the Spanish Inquisition. And no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
