“Excellent Hotel, great value, but police are rogue and pray on tourist for money"”

Hotel experience was very pleasing, however we would not return for the simple fact that the police are criminals and intimidate and rob US tourist for cash.

Area recommendations
No where.

“Not Impressed I should've went for better-”

It was o.k. I wish I stayed in a nicer place. The food was the same in every restuaraunt at the Hotel. They had cleaning service which consisted of bathroom towel changes , making the bed, but not mopping the floor. The floor was always sticky and filthy. People working there though were very respectful and very nice. The best part of my trip though-Guarenteed weather - not a cloud in the sky!

“Will go again next Christmas!”

The hotel was great, the only thing it needs is a gym...I had to go to a gym in the neighborhood. I found a really nice one, with good equipment, etc., but it would have been much easier and would have saved alot of time if the hotel had one.

“Nice hotel in great location”

I stayed one night for a pre cruise. Room was large and had a view of the ocean. There was a convention of young people (Friday night). Many guests were opening and closing their doors to shut these kids. It took 2 calls to the front desk with long rings before someone picked up the call (50 people for the cruise were checking in). I took 40 minutes from the start of the noise (about 1AM) before security calmed them. I complained to management the next morning and was offered an upgrade (which I could not use). Instead offered a free buffet breakfast for the inconvenience. I would stay there again, but check out if there are conventions for young people there!

“Great Experience”

Choose a renovated room; 15th floor and higher. It is well worth the additional charge. We checked in on the 12th floor and asked to look at a renovated room. WOW! We took it and the bellman did all the work to move us. Service and security are fantastic. We will definitely go back. I am USA and my friend is Mexico City.

“Ignore the critics; this hotel is great!!”

I'd heard good things about the Grand Hotel in Acapulco from a friend who'd stayed there a while ago, so I was surprised when I made the booking that there were a number of reviews about the hotel needing renovation. But management has been redoing most of the rooms and implementing extensive renovations throughout the hotel, so this is less an issue now. The rooms were lovely and first rate, with any amenity I wanted at my disposal. The pool is beautiful and well kept up. The dining facilities were excellent and the food was very good, even if one of the restaurant managers was snarky. They need to get better about explaining their rates though, as this was a source of continual consternation during my stay. On the whole, I'd go back, and have encouraged friends to go.

Getting around
Budget more time than you'd expect to get from point A to B during the heavy tourist season. There aren't many streets and traffic is bad.

“Great Rooms”

The bi-lingual staff was very courteous, and filled our request for adjoining rooms. One of the rooms was a corner, and we were rewarded with wrap around balconies. My only wish was that the rooms could have been higher, but we still had a view of the bay. The rooms were very comfortable with plush bedding, and a delightful mix of modern and rustic decor. The balconies were roomy, and had table and chairs. The showers had hot water, and we had plenty of towels. Loved the refrigerator, and housekeeping brought us another coffee maker when we noticed that one of rooms had one and the other didn't. Hotel is still being renovated, so one of the pools wasn't open yet. Had towel service just for the pool area - wonderful. Definitely would recommend this hotel to others. We had a group of six adults, and the two rooms gave us plenty of room.

Area recommendations
Definitely ride the bus instead of taking taxis. The buses are individually decorated with airbrush artwork, powered with boom box music, and the buses can take you anywhere you need to go for 5 pesos. Used the ATM machines to exchange dollars to pesos, and they are just about everywhere and open 24 hours. Enjoyed the Playa Caleta, and took a glass bottom boat ride. Liked the tour of the Fuete de San Diego -- lots of history plus a panoramic view of the bay. Be sure to order some of the fruit drinks at the juice bars -- the smoothies are awesome.
Getting around
When we first got to Acapulco, we took taxis. About the third day, we discovered the public buses and never went back. Much more fun, and got us where we needed to be for about a 1/20 of the cost. We also did a lot of walking, but the sidewalks are a bit rough and can have large potholes. Crossing the main street is the hardest thing to do, but there are a few crossings with traffic lights that help.
What to pack
The weather is warm, so pack flip flops, tank tops and shorts. Very casual dress -- you'll see people wearing coverups over bathing suits on the streets and buses.
Family-friendly activities
Took our 1 year old grandson on a glass bottom boat ride, and he loved looking at the fish!
Outdoors or beach
All of the beaches had the same rough sand, with a big drop off a few feet from the waterline that causes a strong riptide. Water is crystal clear and a great temperature (we were there in December.) The salt content seems very light, so when you dried off from a dip, you didn't feel sticky. Vendors go up and down the beach offering fresh fruit on sticks, so you can always get snacks on the go.
