“Great night in Aberdeen”

Having driven all the way from west Wales for a party, I was expecting a decent place to recover. I got more than I expected. The hotel was excellent, and in any other part of the world would have cost 4x more. The room was spacious, and the whole experience was of an upscale hotel. Breakfast was extra, but was not the usual rip-off prices that chain hotels think they can get away with. Location on the edge of town would not suit everyone, but it's absolutely fine if you've got a car.

“Pleasant Stay”

The hotel was decorated nicely and the staff were very helpful. The rooms were adequately sized. The bed was comfortable and had a wonderfully warm duvet. The bath was a little small but well attended. The food served in the restaurant was good to excellent depending on what was ordered (stick to local specialties). The hotel is across the river from Aberdeen so it may not be conveniently located for travelers without their own vehicle to drive. Also, the hotel doesn't have much of a view to offer, but overall our stay was pleasant.

“Thistle Altens - Aberdeen - Don't judge a book by its cover!!”

Yes indeed....Don't judge a book by its cover!!! When we arrived at the hotel, our initial thoughts where "Oh my god, what have we booked..". The exterior of the hotel does not do it justice. However, when we got inside, it was really nice in comparison. The room was very comfortable and much better than what we initially expected, especially for the price we paid. It is very good value for money. Unfortunately my daughter was looking forward to the pool, but it was shut due to refurbishment. If you expect specific hotel services, it may be best to check this beforehand.

“Huge and Dowdy”

First impression was not good. It is a huge hotel and doesn't look particuarly nice from the outside. Reception area was spacious though a little dark & drab. The trip in the lift and down the very long coridor to my room, reminded me of the Tower of Terror at Disney in Orlando. The decor all appeared very dowdy indeeed. The room was spacious and clean, however there was some mould around the bath. The bar had a strange atmosphere, not at all comfortable and the dining experience? I didn't bother as it looked far too quiet to even try.

“Hotel's wrinkles are showing!”

This hotel is showing its age! The staff were great, showed hospitality and were considerate... but their environment let them down. The restaurant food was tasty, but child-size portions were served with Nouvelle Cuisine prices! Bar food was good, but one of the 'Healthy' options I chose was served with a stale side salad and CRISPS! Fortunately there was the gym!

“Not recommended”

on checking into the hotel my room was a very poor quality and twin room which I had not booked. I complained and was upgraded to a double room right next to the lift shaft which I heard all night. The decor was very poor and the hotel overall is tired. On check out breakfast had been posted to my bill every morning despite never having it. Glad I always check my bill, but how many people look that closely this is obviously a tactic for the hotel to make more money and post breakfast on all rooms every night so beware and have a good look at your bill. Only advantage of this hotel was the free car parking. I will not be back

“Stay away from the Altens Thistle Aberdeen”

The Aberdeen Thistle Hotel is situated in an ugly industrial estate. It has all the charm of a concentration camp. Even on an Expedia special it is without doubt the worst bargain I have purchased this year. While the dining room staff were happy and friendly, the rest of the hotel staff were indifferent at best - no response to requests for additional milk, a broken hairdryer etc. The room was one of the most uncomfortable I have ever stayed in - it was stuffy and almost unbearably hot. If you really do have to be in Aberdeen (and its a nice city, so you should enjoy it), rather buy a tent and camp on the beach than stay in this dreadful hotel.
