We stayed for a little over a week in December. The beach is absolutely beautiful. I spent a lot of time snorkeling. It was an amazing experience for me. One time, I saw a sea turtle and swam with it for about 20 minutes.
My only complaint was the staff at the beach who rented out equipment and moved the chairs, etc. Some of them were obnoxious.
There is a nearby sister hotel called Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. As a guest of Mauna Kea Beach Resort, you can use their facilities as well. This little secret was not told to us by the staff. We learned it from another guest, who seemed to have been a long-time regular guest. Many of the hotel guests were elderly people. We were happy about it, since that made the hotel a quiet place to stay.
If you are looking to be pampered by a swanky high dollar hotel then this place is not for you. I found clean quiet surrounded by horse country beauty .A nothing fancy, no frills great place to stay on top of the big Island. The hotel staff is very friendly and the restaurant next door serves excellent food and has a well stocked bar. By yourself or with family, this is a great place to stay on one of the most beautiful parts of the island.
"Great place to spend your vacation of a lifetime."
We love this stylish hotel with it's excellent facilities, beautifully designed and well kept grounds, comfortable rooms, location, small but idyllic beach and friendly, helpful staff. This hotel has a character of it's own. We visited other hotels on the island during our stay, but few had the "atmosphere" of the Fairmont Orchid.
Be aware that the food and beverages can be expensive if you are staying on site for your visit. Price should not be taken as a guide to quality since not all of the on site eating facilities offer value for money. Brown's Beach House restaurant serves excellent food and is well worth the visit for an evening dinner. The atmosphere, quality of food and service was outstanding. We had probably the best meal of our vacation there, but again be prepared that this standard comes with a price. That said, most decent restaurants on the island are expensive.
Unfortunately the hotel also seems to be a favorite with a number of large corporations for company events. The hotel staff did an excellent job of keeping the inconvenience caused by organized company events to a minimum for other hotel guests. The same cannot always be said for some of the company visitors who are determined to "party hard", although to be fair there were only isolated instances that caused any disturbance during our wonderful stay. There is little the hotel can do about this, but you might want to ask "who is in town?"
We stayed at the Mauna Lani for our honeymoon. The resort had everything on site, for a perfect stay. Great restaurants, golf, stores, etc. Great pools and beaches. Swam with turtles only feet off our beach. The hotel is open with lush landscaping throughout! The hotel staff was super nice and accommodating! Beautiful sunsets and almost no one on the beaches. Very private.
It's our first time to Hawaii and this hotel make us feel very welcome.
The room we stayed has very nice view, and it's very clean.
It's worth to upgrade your room to makai room (lagoon tower) as they renovated these rooms tastefully.
The price of food is very expansive and it is good idea to go to the nearby market to get your meals in between to save yourself some money.
