Great hotel on beautiful grounds although not accessible for the elderly and/or disabled as there is no lift and lots of stairs. Rooms were very comfortable, staff very helpful and polite, great breakfasts and the swimming pool, sauna and steam room are excellent.

"Easy to find if driving and very pleasant"
Nice welcoming couple and very clean. A wee bit out of the way but not hard to find. Lovely breakfast. On quite a busy road so some traffic noise.

"B&B close to airport, far from Edinburgh traffic."
Older couple, we stayed 2 nights with very early morning exit to airport. James fed us supper in lieu of breakfast at 4 a.m. All meals were admirable. James believes in good quality and it shows. Very old historic building has a bit of old dust in the air, which one must expect in such places. Bed had duvet (blanket encased in sheet similar to pillow case), as is typical in UK, but no separate sheet so we felt overly warm. Located at top edge of an informal park area where sometimes horses are trained for jumping events; lovely mansion is at the lower edge of the park with the Firth of Forth beyond. The famous Firth bridges are visible from the park, and South Queensferry is just minutes away. The airport is about a 15 to 20 minute drive.

Pocket Guide: Edinburgh West Lothian 4 stars Hotels

Due west of the capital, much of West Lothian is industrial and of limited interest to tourists. Where it meets the Firth of Forth however, South Queensferry is a charming small waterside town with great views of the magnificent Forth Bridges. Boats go from here to peaceful Inchcolm Island with its ruined abbey. Nearby is the grand 18th-century pile of Hopetoun House, and the splendid ruins of Mary Queen of Scots’ birthplace, Linlithgow Palace.
