Sample Swansea’s Vibrant Culture
The great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas affectionately described his birthplace as an “ugly, lovely town”, but a lot has changed in the hundred years since he was born. The city – the second largest in Wales – was built on mining in the 19th Century and was once known as “Copperopolis” but in the last decade it has been invigorated by a host of regeneration schemes.
Now visitors can enjoy the new Dylan Thomas Centre, which brings to life his work in vivid fashion, the Swansea Museum and the National Waterfront Museum, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and the Environment Centre. There are a few traditional buildings that remain, including the remnants of Swansea castle, the Morriston Tabernacle nonconformist church and the Guildhall.
Shopping in Swansea
Swansea has a multitude of shops to explore – more than 230 – and hosts the largest indoor market in Wales. The market – it needs no other title – dates back to the Middle Ages and there are more than 100 stalls with fresh local produce including Welsh laverbread, cockles from Penclawdd, Gower Salt Marsh Lamb and Welsh beef. There are also cafes and many clothes stalls selling vintagewear and the latest street fashion.
Nature in Swansea
Swansea has more than 50 green spaces, of which five are Green Flag Award-winning parks, and brings the countryside into town. Close by you can find Swansea Bay, which has a five-mile beach stretching along the bay, full of sand and salty air. With the Gower Peninsula in easy reach, you can also find several interesting castles and the Bronze Age sites at the Llethryd Tooth Cave.

The city boasts The LC – an indoor waterpark with a white-knuckle waterslide, wave pool and indoor surf machine. Rugby and football fans also have lots to entertain them. The 20,000 capacity Liberty Stadium is home to Swansea City Football Club which plays in the English Premier League, and the Ospreys, a top level rugby club.
