Human settlement in this part of the Arno basin dates back to Etruscan times, but the present industrial town began to develop in the 13th century beside a fortified bridge over the River Era. Today Pontederas economic mainstay is Piaggio, manufacturer of Italys best-known motor scooters. A museum in the factory buildings displays a weird and wonderful collection of Vespas through the ages.
