We were supposed to be in Cabo this week but decided to check out Mazatlan after the hurricane. We were very happy we did. The staff at the Emerald Bay were very accommodating when we asked to be moved to an upper floor the second night. The bartenders at the pool remembered our room numbers and special drinks when ordering drinks from the day before. We had no trouble getting our tickets to sign for food or drinks. We did not choose to do the all inclusive. There are so many places to eat on the beach and in town. The pulmoni drivers would drop us off at a restaurant and would come back in about 2 hours to drive us somewhere else. The service was spectacular everywhere. We spent a couple days at the downtown hotel on the beach. We took showers in the gym and left our bags at the concierge so we could walk around downtown. Both hotels were super clean and the staff were wonderful. Can't wait to go back. So many things to do.

It was all in all a good experience. This hotel is far from any activities so bring your cab budget. It's like 100 ($7.50 USD) pesos to the Golden Zone.
I found that much of Mazatlán is Spanish speaking only. My experiences in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Playa Del Carmen, and Cancun had many more folks who were bilingual. Shame on me for not being but for a tourist town I'd expected a bit less trouble communicating with hotel staff.
We were there for 6 nights and only had two real issues during the stay. The first was that they were replacing pool deck tiles with a hammer, chisel, and sometimes a jackhammer. This noise was unbearable, especially bright and early in the morning. A brief question to the head maintenance guy and the noise was limited to afternoon hours and stopped completely over the weekend. Gracias! The next was Sunday night when there were many local guests and everyone had a boombox and/or too much to drink making for loud voices. That quieted down about 11pm but 15m later, the Karaoke started up in the room above ours. They ran until about 3am. That was a bit tough.
The final thing was that the pool could have been operated better. It was one of those 'zero edge' pools that requires water to spill over the edge to be automatically skimmed. The water level was too low so it wasn't being skimmed and after busy days there was a float of debris including body and tanning oils on the surface.
We loved the resort. Our 3 bedroom villa was very well furnished and clean. The location was great - away from the crowds and yet not too far! One could easily access public transportation or take tours: whichever suited our fancy.
The only issue we had was that there was no wireless connection from our unit (they say they'll have it soon) and we had to take our laptop to the pool area or the restaurant to be able to access intenet. This was a problem because we could not view the tours available or book them online. We had to rely on the staff. After a couple of days the wireless stopped working from other locations too! Also, there was some stink from the drains. In one bedroom it was unbearable.

We had a great stay at El Sol La Vida. It's beautiful and kept very clean. It's directly on a quiet beach and is attached to a cafe with wonderful food. It's a little off the beaten path, which is great for a quiet stay on the beach (we hardly saw anyone on the beach!), but it's not near downtown. The owners are great about taking you places or calling taxis for you, so that's helpful. The owners are also native English speakers. It's definitely geared towards couples. I would not recommend for families.
From the moment we arrived at the resort, we loved it. I can't say enough about the staff and their customer service skills.The resort is stunning from every view. The beach runs for miles and all of the expected luxuries are readily accessible. The resort is huge and remotely located on over 800 acres and access protected be a security gate. It's like being in a gated community which put us in an extra relaxed state. Though there was only one restaurant - we can't complain about the food - it's well prepared and sizable portions. The rooms are very nicely designed and our ocean view from the balcony was breath taking. The room's restroom was large with double sinks, a private toilet, a stand-up shower and separate tub. Our room had a mini-frig, coffee maker, iron and ironing board, a valuables safe, cable TV and good wi-fi reception. The pools, spa & salon were also nice.
As I mentioned the resort is over 800 acres but there is only one restaurant and no shopping - that includes a souvenir shop. The hotel provided us a shuttle into the city to shop but the city isn't close by and they don't wait for you - they return for you. None of the boat tours pick-up from the the resort beach so you also need to get a shuttle to the city to take advantage of those things. While the cleaning staff were excellent, there were insects in the sinks regularly. We weren't sure if that was a pest control issue or a Mazatlan issue but they didn't keep us from enjoying our stay.
