"Small hotel located in lovely little town."
Booked a one night stay as we were attending wedding nearby. Very confusing way into hotel through its cafe. Never did find reception just a small cupboard like messy office. Interior signs were quite confusing. Staff were friendly, though we were annoyed to have them chapping on our door at 8.50am wanting in to clean room. Breakfast was served in the cafe and for the cost of the room for a night was a bit tacky. Room itself was spotless and comfortable. No plug near the only mirror was a pain if you wanted to use a hairdyer. Nice enough hotel but overpriced when you had to wander all over hotel trying to find someone to check you in and when you see where breakfast was served.

"Tranquil location outside Edinburgh"
I'd highly recommend Highfield House, it's a beautiful old country house, with a lovely peaceful atmosphere and an idyllic garden which guests are free to enjoy. My room was large, with a huge bed, and the ensuite bathroom had a bath big enough for me to lie down in! Jill ably runs the B&B, the breakfast was really nice, and guests ate all together at the large table, which I found sociable and fun, as a lone traveller. Jill is a great hostess, very approachable and full of sensible suggestions about things to do and where to go. Trains run frequently to Edinburgh city centre a few miles away. It was just my kind of place, homely, comfortable and welcoming.

"Scottish Charm close to Edinburgh"
My wife and I had a lovely 4-night stay at the Bankton House Hotel. It has a wonderful old-school Scottish charm that really started our first trip to Scotland off on the right foot. The entire facility was well maintained both inside and out and since it is family owned and operated, the staff was very genuine and a delight to get to know. We stayed in a room within their cottage that had a shared bathroom which I believe we shared with only one other room. We typically showered in the evening and did not have an issue with having to wait to use the facility. The hotel offers a bar/ restaurant area with a full menu. The bar seems to be busy every evening with friendly locals. A separate quaint breakfast nook is available for those who want to start there morning off with a traditional Scottish/ English breakfast (additional charge for the breakfast). I would have to say the breakfast was nice and the atmosphere of the nook was a great way to spend our start to the morning. This hotel is located in Livingston; only a short drive to Edinburgh. We also were able to easily access the highway to get to other surrounding major cities relatively quickly. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

"Nice friendly and quiet accommodation."
Was totally delighted with this place which is located up in the hills just a few kms from the centre of Linlithgow. Lodge is modern and has nice well maintained grounds and the owner is very polite and friendly. Our Upstairs room was warm and breezy and we enjoyed meeting and chatting with other travellers in the upstairs lounge which overlooks the internal dining room. Wonderful fresh continental breakfast (which you pay for as an optional extra).A very positive introduction to Scotland for us and one we would highly recommend. Good trouble free wireless internet.

Pocket Guide: Edinburgh West Lothian 3 stars Hotels

Due west of the capital, much of West Lothian is industrial and of limited interest to tourists. Where it meets the Firth of Forth however, South Queensferry is a charming small waterside town with great views of the magnificent Forth Bridges. Boats go from here to peaceful Inchcolm Island with its ruined abbey. Nearby is the grand 18th-century pile of Hopetoun House, and the splendid ruins of Mary Queen of Scots’ birthplace, Linlithgow Palace.
