Central location. Bathrooms very tired. As is hallway and stairwells. One receptionist great, other very un accommodating and little customer service. Bar staff very accommodating. Menu very limited but done well.

Jane Austen themed refurbishment provides a unique take on a country pub. We had one night on B&B basis, all worked well. Country-style furnishing of the bedroom overlooking the garden to the rear. Sizeable room with double bed but only one easy chair, so the other occupant has to sit on the bed, not a deal breaker by any means. Passing mid-week commuter traffic could disrupt sleep, if so, sensitive sleepers should request a room away from the main road. Since the inn is in the middle of a telecoms black hole, mobiles remain dead. However, phone calls from the guest rooms are gratis - nice idea.
The complimentary sloe gin in the room was not sampled but a further nice touch, as were the two malts in the coffee nook off the upstairs corridor. Not suggesting for one minute that this is a dipso's delight but it could be convenient for that fortifying nip before negotiating the by-roads. Walking naturally, not driving. Speaking of coffee, there are Nespresso machines, one for hot water plus a selection of pads and teas available all day for residents to sup in their rooms. Your choice if you wish to combine with said malts.
Sadly there was a rather restricted choice for the cooked breakfast and the portion size had been dictated by an accountant. There was no fish option. Smoked haddock or even a kipper would have worked wonders for the inner man. Toast comes in doorstep dimensions, whilst tasty make sure your dentition is up to the task.
Large, hospitable inn. Friendly and helpful staff, who go the extra mile to ensure you are well looked after. Parking is limited and, although there are many car parks they charge, a lot, from 8-7pm.
Rooms are upstairs and are well furnished in giant, antiqued pieces and look impressive, initially. It all looks a little tired and a bit grubby, especially the bathroom. This was large and spacious but not clean. Not in the corners, the cracks, the crevices. Even the complimentary shampoo bottles has old, dirt stuck on then and were discoloured. Attention to detail is needed.
I was in a single, but the bed was cot-like, a frame encased the mattress and made it hard to avoid knocking it. And the light fittings were massive, totally overpowering, even the bedside light was blinding.
However, handy location. Great breakfast. Powerful shower. And the staff were caring and attentive. An easy stay.

We stayed on a Saturday night after a family wedding nearby. The Inn on the Hill could do with a few touches, eg night light by the back entrance. Coming in late, one of our party tripped up a step because it was too dark to see properly. The ensuites would benefit from an extractor fan. Otherwise the staff were friendly and helpful, the bed clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was lovely.
