Santorini’s capital, Thira is a stunning expanse of white houses built into the cliff top 300 metres above the caldera, formed by a by volcanic explosion 3,600 years ago. Packed with tourists in August, its narrow streets are filled with jewellery stores, chic boutiques, pseudo-traditional tavernas and cafes. Its also home to Santorini’s top nightclubs. Take a mule ride or the cable car down to the harbour – or brave the 580 zigzagging steps.
