French-born architect Auguste Montferrand built St. Isaac's Cathedral in the mid-19th century, and was built to be the main church of the Russian Empire. The church can accommodate 14,000 worshippers and is used today mostly a museum. A highlight of the church is its huge icon wall that separates it from the rest of the building. It is decorated with eight malachite and two lapus lazali columns.
