We booked the room for a 4day break intending to be out visiting the city most of the time. The location was great, right by the rail and bus stations and easy to find. The room was a reasonable size and really clean. Breakfast was of the good continental variety (don't expect full cooked) and there was no need to eat lunch (you could fill your boots!). The location made it easy to visit all the sights we wanted to see, using u and s bahn and the bus. There were plenty of restaurants nearby, so there was a good choice of evening meals.
Only thing I can say about this hotel is you do need a person at the receptionist all the time waited 5 minutes for the guy coming back for making him self coffee to get my key to my room not good and maybe tea and coffee and a kettle in the room apart from this I can't falt this hotel
We stay at this hotel every year - it is situated right in the heart of St. Pauli two minutes from the tube station and major bus stops. It is extremely clean, friendly, quiet and the breakfasts are excellent. It provides very good value for money and I would highly recommend the Stella Maris to anyone wishing to explore the city of Hamburg.
Clean, modern classic city hotel. Ten minutes walk to the centre of Hamburg city. All the modern shops in the Europa Passe and upmarket names in jewellery and high end clothes shops in Neuer Wall. Tiffany's, Cartier, Bulgari, you name it is there if you have the money to spend on top quality merchandise. The Alsterhaus is very similar to Debenhams or John Lewis but the variety and expanse is immense. If you love shopping, Hamburg is the city for you. Plenty of interesting attractions to visit, such as the Miniture Wunderland or museums. The underground is easy to access and the buses run frequently. We visited at the beginning of November, but if you want to see the Christmas Markets, then the last week in November and the first week in December are the best times to go. The German's love Christmas and the streets and shops were just beginning to get festive when we visited. We had never visited Germany before and found Hamburg a friendly and welcoming city. Most people speak reasonable English, but to be courteous to your hosts, it would be wise to gen up on the standard phrases and take a phrase book with you.
Bit apprehensive on what to expect having read reviews after I had booked, some good some bad.
However this is a good hotel to stay at,a little dated but it is clean with helpful english speaking reception staff.
The buffet continental breakfast is excellent.
One reviewer complained of the fact that the rooms had the old CRT televisions - get a life.
Hope to visit Hamburg next summer and wouldn't hesitate to book this hotel again.
