El Jadida (formerly Mazagan) sits 100 km south of Casablanca. The Portuguese, who occupied the city in the early 16th century, erected a massive, hewn-stone fortress along the shore. Visitors can tour the bastions and ramparts of this fortress, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another surviving structure is the cistern, a watery underground chamber reflecting columns lit by a shaft of daylight.
