In the western part of the Ruhr area, Duisberg is home to the world's largest inland harbour and seaport. Traditionally known for its steel industry, the city is now noted for its university and symphony orchestra. It is also home to 60,000 Turkish Muslims, who began settling in the city in the 1960s as part of Germany's guest worker program. The new Merkez Mosque is being built here.
