I don't know why all the 1-star reviews; I had an utterly pleasant experience at the Bear Hotel! I will confirm the presence of the bar previously complained about - it is there, and it draws a crowd, but it wasn't so loud that I noticed from the room. Paul and Cheryl were excellent hosts (appreciate you two putting out some cereal for me when I left WELL before the scheduled breakfast hours), the room charming, comfy, and clean. Did not notice any faults in the rest of the facilities as previously noted by other reviewers. Location of the hotel is a nice bonus too, right at the head of the main street, so access to anything and everything is easy as pie.
Short and sweet, the hotel is aged, but is full of the associated charm that comes with such a place. And I'd rather stay at a place like the Bear where the staff is so personable as opposed to a "Ritz" where the desk doesn't remember my name.
I stayed for 1 night and will probably stay again. My room was clean, the bed was wonderfully comfortable but the bathroom was quite small, however I wasn't in there long so did that really matter? No.
My room lead onto the breakfast room and that was a bit strange. I am a light sleeper and heard the tables being laid at about 6.30, but it was only 1 night.
Breakfast was good and Diana was lovely.
"Really nice pub in a friendly picturesque village."
This pub really undersells how good it is, the food is superb rooms comfortable and a great fresh English Breakfast with the papers was a real treat, we stayed in the family room at the top of the pub huge room ideal for a large family.

From first look to lasting impression, this historic Hotel was a pleasure to experience. The setting is lovely, in a tiny village close to Chippenham and not far from Bath. The landlord is absolutely charming and the staff welcoming and helpful. Although the place is under refurbishment, this in no way detracted from it's comfort and friendly atmosphere.
