In 1944, roughly 80 percent of Caen was destroyed during the Battle of Normandy. Rebuilt during subsequent decades, the city is now mostly modern in character. However, some important historical landmarks remain, such as Château de Caen (one of the largest medieval castles in Europe), and the Womens Abbey and Mens Abby, built by William the Conqueror in 1060 and 1063.
