I stayed at the North Garden Hotel for five nights in February. I highly recommend this Chinese hotel. This hotel is in an excellent location, off the Wangfujing, behind the large Wangfujing Bookstore and next to the Oriental Plaza Mall. The hotel is ideally located near alot of shops and restaurants. There are alot of great food courts in the area with delicious and cheap food(one on the lower level of the Oriental Plaza Mall and there's another one below the McDonald's across the street from the hotel). There is a subway station minutes away from the hotel (in the lower level of the Mall). You can walk to Tianneman Square in about 10 to 15 minutes or it's one subway stop away. The room is clean and comfortable. The bed is firm but that's the way I like it. The bathroom was nice with lots of hot water and good water pressure. The only thing about this hotel that surprised me is that there were no toiletries. They did provide a bar of soap but if you want toiletries you have to purchase a toiletries pack (toothbrush/paste, shampoo/conditioner, comb, face towel etc) for about 30 RMB. Otherwise, I had a great stay, great location, great price.
Located not too far from the 109 bus line (can catch to Donsi subway station), Sha Tan Hotel is a great hotel for those who spend most of their time out and about. It is a 2 min walk to Jingshan Park (go there on Sunday mornings to hear the older Mao generation singing old revolutionary songs). It is nestled in an old hutong area (not the 'new' old hutongs that appear to attract naive foreigners). The staff are very friendly, some speak good English - however this is China so don't be surprised if you come across people who don't speak your language :)
The room itself is nothing special, but large enough to not feel claustrophobic. The staff don't harass you to take tours (they actually referred me to the subway to access a POI). You don't even pass the front desk on your way in/out which is a bonus for those wanting to be left alone. Probably not a good hotel for first timers in Beijing.

Located in Beijing city center, China, Sha Tan Business Hotel is 400 meters from the Forbidden City, 1.5 km from Wangfujing …More
There are great inexpensive Chinese restaurant near the hotel,
clean, comfortable, personal do not take tips.
There is only problem - the taxi drivers unable to read and speak English and can not find the way to the hotel by address in english, we drove around the block for a long time and finally landed in the 1 km away.
Necessary to take the picture and address of the china characters.
Nice, clean apartment with kitchen, bath, living room, tv,, AC, even a washer, at a very reasonable price. Perfect for an extended stay in Beijing. Located near bus, subway and cabs for easy access to the whole city. Great view from my apartment on the 23rd floor. Kitchen had burners, fridge, microwave. Bath had waterfall shower head and small washing machine. Living area had nice love seat and LCD tv. Dining area with table and chairs. Nice big bed with duvet. Plenty of closet space. Free Wifi. I would definitely stay here again. Many little restaurants to eat at in the area. Secure entry. Clean elevators.
Room is attractive and comfy although simple. The lobby is charming, as are the courtyards and flowers. But no window screens and no TV in English. Adding a bar of soap and luggage stand would be nice. The street it's on is dark and dirty, but didn't feel unsafe. I like the Lama Temple area. Sweet helpful staff. Poor Internet but that may be Beijing.
