A fanasating visit to this historical city.We were thrilled it was advent time as the Christmas markets were magical. The historical sights were extremely interesting and the Zwinger could rival Versailles!.We went to the opera and the experience was first class. The shopping area could not be bettered.Gastronomically excellent. The Ibis we stayed in was a superb base.
I visited Dresden for two days, so the most important thing for me was the distance to the main attractions. The location of the hotel made it possible to see a lot even in quite a short period of time. As a result, I was satisfied with my cultural program. I took wonderful walks through the old town. Also practically all the main museums are within the walking distance. It was possible to ask at the reception how to go to some particular place and get the map with a root shown.
The room was very nice, neat and quite spatial. All the facilities seemed to be new. Though it was in the city center, it was quiet.
There are also a lot of cafes and several huge shopping centers nearby.
The hotel is beautifully located mid way between the railway station and the AltStadt, both a 10 minute walk away.
Trams are easy to use, you can buy tickets on the platform from a machine . If there are two or more of you buy a small family ticket which gives you great savings
Besides all of the Baroque City sites go out to the suburbs on the trams particularly by the Elbe, its beautiful. There are two funicular railways to ride as the surrounding hills come right down to the Elbe and you will have great views of the City.
Walk round the Zwimmer later in the day or night, it is illuminated, much quieter and magical.
Visit Leipzig and Meissen if you want day trips out of town
Great Galleries and Museums
Go to the Flea market on Sat morning by the bridges, lots of antiques and other interesting things to buy.
Sunday everyone chills out, no shops open but lots of people out cycling and walking
Great ice cream vendors 1 euro a cone , watch tenors singing Verde by the FrauenKirche
Loads to do, just get going!
Big nice clean room, with very nice view to the modern part of Dresden, 200 meters of the old town, if you have car do not warry they have huge parking 6 euros per 24 houres on Sunday parking is for free.
Did not expect a view of Dresden from the hotel. Watched the evening set over the Frauenkirche, residenz, etc. Room was basic but clean and could open the window all the way for fresh air at night. Breakfast was good and full of chatty Germans having a good time.
