The city of Alajuela is in Alajuela province, 20 km (13 mi) northwest of San Jose and just 3 km (2 mi) north of Juan Santamaria International Airport. Many visitors to Costa Rica stay here on their way in and out the country. Colonial architecture is still evident in the city center. The central market, covering an entire city block, is a great place to buy souvenirs.
