"Bare bone in the heart of Rome"
Great location, walking distance from Termini. Cheap and noisy, but clean. AC did not work in our room. The reception clerk offered van transportation to Fiumicino which worked great for us (55 euros in June 2015). Across the street from a very popular gellateria, La Romana, since 1947(best we had in Italia).

"Fantastic Budget Hotel"
A really good budget hotel in a quiet location, perfect for families. In a lovely old building with marblw floors and an old-style cage-lift. Outside the main tourist areas (hence the peace) but easily walkable to the ancient ruins, Vatican, Spanish Steps etc. All rooms have a very comfortable bed, hair-dryer, shower, TV and kettle. A decent breakfast (something not provided at many budget places) too. Manager was extremely helpful too and happy to let us leave our luggage on our last day after check out so we could make the most of our time.

"Slightly off beaten track BUT...."
...it has THE best ice cream parlour on the next block - even the locals queue round the block at 10PM(!!!) to get in here. The rooms are so quiet. Very basic and the breakfast could do with just being a jug of coffee and some toast instead of some odd unbuttered sandwiches of salami and cheese with yogurts and custard donuts!? The staff are pretty helpful if you ask for anything. Maps of Rome are free at the desk and the shower had very hot running water after it ran for a little while. There is only Italian TV as no Sky at all, so just the odd dodgy 80's film in English and lots of very odd Italian games shows and soap operas. The WIFI wont let you stream anything but is ok for radio and general web brousing from the comfort of your own room, which has heating as well as a fan for cooling. Even late Nov early Dec the temp was up in the 20's so we had the windows wide open and it was a lovely quiet area and no noisy neighbours. About ten minute walk to the main Termini one way and the Spanish Steps the other so pretty central to most sights. Great sandwich/deli round the corner (turn right as you come out and right again into the next street) and fab restaurant called Baddo's on the road to the station.

"Fine as a base for a cheap visit"
I stayed for a few days as part of a cheap weekend visit to Rome. And for that purpose, I thought it was good. The location is very central, about five minutes walk from the main station and just off one of the main roads through Rome. Breakfast is very basic, but well-staffed. The biggest downside is the Wi-Fi - the reception in my bedroom, at least, was virtually non-existent.

Pocket Guide: Rome Via Veneto 2 stars Hotels

Made famous by 'La Dolce Vita' film in 1960, the Via Veneto is going through a glamorous renaissance. Bars, restaurants, chic hotels and boutiques all vie for attention in the street which coined the expression 'paparazzo' – the surname of the photojournalist in the film. Nearby, the Spanish Steps are the place for lovers' trysts, shopping, and honing the Italian art of 'dolce far niente' – idling and people-watching.
