Head to George Town where 17th-century Fort St. George has a museum displaying the history of Chennai and the fort itself. While you’re there, pop into St. Mary's Church, which is within the fort and is the oldest surviving British church in India. You’ll also see the former Admiralty House with its memorial to Robert Clive, the 18th-century commander-in-chief of British India.

Take the kids to the Children’s Museum, one of the galleries within the Government Museum complex. They’ll marvel at the life-size models of dinosaurs including a stegosaurus and a tyrannosaurus. There’s small-scale fun to be had in the museum’s kids’ corner among the collections of dolls, toys and curios.

Spend the day at Marina Beach, where you can watch games of cricket or fly a kite along the sands. The riptides are too strong for swimming, but it’s perfectly safe to do some gentle paddling at the edge of the sand. At the southern end is Madras Lighthouse, which has the only lighthouse lift in India as well as wonderful views from the top.
