Designated a suburban new town after World War II, Basildon was created to overcome London overcrowding. Chiefly residential, there are regular trains to London and the motorway also passes through town. The town centre is full of sops and coffee houses. Two main shopping centres — Eastgate and Westgate shopping centres — have more than 100 shops each.
